Eye diseases and loss of self-sufficiency of elderly

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem diplomové práce bylo zjistit, které oční onemocnění (katarakta, glaukom, věkem podmíněná makulární degenerace, diabetická retinopatie) vede ke ztrátě soběstačnosti seniorů a má dopad na kvalitu života. Metodika: Výzkum měl kvantitativní charakter. Na sběr dat byly použity dva standardizované dotazníky, dotazník NEI-VFQ 25 (National Eye Institute - Visual Functioning Questionnaire) zaměřený na hodnocení kvality života a dotazník IADL ke zhodnocení soběstačnosti. Soubor tvořilo 162 pacientů s vybraným očním onemocněním ve věku od 65 let. Výsledky: Bylo zjištěno, že nejvíce (56,8 %) dotázaných seniorů se při hodnocení soběstačnosti nachází v kategorii Částečná soběstačnost (IADL 45-75 bodů) a nejméně seniorů (15,4 %) v kategorii Nesoběstačnost (IADL 0-40 bodů). Nebyl zjištěn vliv pohlaví na soběstačnost seniora (p = 0,516). Soběstačnost seniorů závisí na typu očního onemocnění (p = 0,0038), věku (p < 0,001) a délce trvání očního onemocnění (p = 0,001). V hodnocení kvality života nezávisle na typu očního onemocnění byly zjištěny nejnižší průměrné hodnoty v doménách Všeobecné zdraví (23,3) a Všeobecné vidění (30,2), nejvyšší průměrná hodnota (91) byla vyhodnocena v doméně barevného vidění. Závěr: Na ztrátu soběstačnosti a kvalitu života seniorů mají nejvýraznější vliv dva typy očního onemocnění: vlhká forma věkem podmíněné makulární degenerace a diabetická retinopatie, délka trvání očního onemocnění a věk. Soběstačnost seniorů s očním onemocněním nebyla ovlivněna pohlavím ani hodnocením kvality života.

Abstract:

Aim: The aim of the thesis was to determine which eye diseases (cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy) leads to loss of independence of elderly and has an impact on quality of life. Methods: The research was quantitative in nature. For data collection two standardized questionnaires were used, interview NEI VFQ-25 (National Eye Institute - Visual Functioning Questionnaire) to assess the quality of life and IADL questionnaire to assess the independence. The sample consisted of 162 selected patients with eye diseases and age above 65 years. Result: It was found that most of respondents (56.8%) in the evaluation of self-sufficiency were in the category Partial self-sufficiency (IADL 45-75 points) and least of seniors (15.4%) in the category of dependence (IADL 0-40 points). No influence of gender on self-sufficiency of seniors was found (p = 0.516). Self-sufficiency of seniors depends on the type of eye disease (p = 0.0038), age (p <0.001) and length of the eye disease (p = 0.001). In the evaluation of quality of life, regardless of the type of eye disease, the lowest average values in the domains of general health (23.3) and the general vision (30.2) were found, while the highest average value (91) was evaluated in the domain of color vision. Conclusion: On the loss of independence and quality of life of seniors have the most significant effect two types of eye disease (wet form of age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy) together with eye disease duration and age. Independence of seniors with eye diseases has not been found to be affected neither by gender nor evaluation of their quality of life.
