Influence of visual variables on visual search on maps.

Abstract:

This master thesis builds upon research from various psychological studies that have explored the effect of asymmetric search. This effect has been demonstrated on various background-free stimulus materials, and this study aims to investigate its functionality in relation to maps. Based on a literature review, modifications to symbols were identified where asymmetric search occurred. Three selected types of modification (change in orientation, shape, and curvature) were subsequently tested in our own experiment using a user test on tasks with no background, with a simple and complex map background. It was found that this effect is useful in visualizations without a background and with a simple map background, particularly in the case of symbol modifications involving changes in shape and curvature. Tasks involving a change in orientation did not confirm assumptions from previous studies. Additionally, characteristics of respondents were compared. Younger respondents (up to 25 years old) reacted faster than their older counterparts. Cartographically educated respondents recorded faster reaction times than those without such education. Differences between genders were not statistically significant.

Abstract:

Táto práca nadväzuje na výskumy z rôznych psychologických štúdií ktoré sa zaoberali efektom asymetrického vyhľadávania. Tento efekt bol preukázaný na rôznych stimulačných materiáloch bez pozadia, a v tejto práci sa bude zisťovať jeho funkčnosť vo vzťahu ku mapám. Na základe rešerše literátury boli identifikované úpravy znakov, pri ktorých dochádza k asymetrickemu vyhľadávaniu. Vybrané 3 typy úprav (zmena orientácie, tvaru a zaoblenia) boli následne overené vo vlastnom experimente pomocou užívateľského testu na úlohách bez podkladu, s jednoduchým a komplexným mapovým podkladom. Bolo zistené, že pri použití úpravy znakov so zmenou tvaru a zaoblenia, má tento efekt využitie pri vizualizáciách bez podkladu a s jednoduchým mapovým podkladom. Úlohy so zmenou orientácie nepotvrdili predpoklady z predošlých štúdií. Doplnkovo boli porovnané aj charakteristiky respondentov. Mladší respondenti (do 25 rokov) reagovali rýchlejšie ako ich starší náprotivci. Kartograficky vzdelaní respondenti zaznamenali rýchlejšie reakčné časy ako respondenti bez neho. Rozdiely reakčných časov medzi pohlaviami neboli štatisticky významné.
