Evaluation of visual intceraction of brachycephalic breeds of dogs with humans

Abstract:

Tato pilotní studie se věnuje problematice mezidruhové komunikace, konkrétně komunikace mezi psem a člověkem. V posledních letech můžeme pozorovat nárůst popularity brachycefalických plemen, u kterých můžeme zaznamenat mnoho zdravotních problémů. Anatomickými změnami jejich lebky mohou kromě zdravotních komplikací vznikat i komunikační problémy. Je známo, že lidé jsou schopni porozumět signálům psů, ale dosud neexistuje výzkum, zdali brachycefalie tuto schopnost negativně ovlivnila. Cílem této práce bylo zjistit, (i) zda lidé rozpoznají vizuální signály brachycefalického psa stejně jako u ostatních plemen, (ii) podle kterých obličejových rysů psa se lidé orientují a (iii) zdali jsou majitelé brachycefalických plemen úspěšnější než majitelé ostatních psích plemen, nebo lidé bez jakéhokoliv psa. Hypotézy předpokládaly pro rozpoznání vizuálních signálů brachycefalického psa ve srovnání s kontrolním psem, (i) nižší celkovou úspěšnost v různě nasimulovaných situacích, (ii) že vypovídajícími obličejovými rysy pro správné určení situací budou oči a (iii), že majitelé brachycefalických plemen budou úspěšnější v porozumění těmto psům. Byly nasimulovány čtyři různé situace, ve kterých byly použity dvě plemena psů. Experimentální skupinu tvořilo brachycefalické plemeno bostonský teriér a kontrolní skupinu jack russell teriér. Konkrétní situace zahrnovaly volání jménem na psa, hru s míčkem, separaci a ohrožení psa cizí osobou. Po zdokumentování psů v jednotlivých situacích byly vytvořeny fotografie zobrazující pouze hlavu a výraz zachycující psa v dané chvíli, které byly následně použity v připraveném dotazníku, jehož výsledky byly statisticky vyhodnoceny. V této části byla použita analýza pomocí SAS, verze 9.4, proc GLIMMIX. Z výsledků je patrné, že vliv plemene byl pro určení situací prokázán pouze v případě hry psa s míčkem. U bostonského teriéra byl výraz během této situace rozpoznán pouze 13,7 % respondentů, zatímco u jack russell teriéra 68,4 %. U ostatních situací nebyly nalezeny rozdíly. Orientace podle očí byla nefrekventovanější, po ní následovala podle uší, tak v obou případech nebyl nalezen statisticky významný rozdíl mezi experimentální a kontrolní skupinou. Ovšem, majitelé brachycefalických psů měli tendenci se u experimentální skupiny orientovat více podle uší než ostatní respondenti. Při analýze vlivu vlastnictví brachycefalických psů nebyl nalezen signifikantní vliv v určování jednotlivých situací. Tyto výsledky nepotvrzují zvolené hypotézy. Z výsledků je též zřejmé, že schopnost rozpoznat vizuální signály psa podle fotografií hlavy není dostatečným zdrojem informací, podle kterého se lidé orientují při rozeznávání signálů.

Abstract:

This pilot study deals with the issue of interspecies communication, specifically communication between dogs and humans. In recent years, we can observe the growing popularity of brachycephalic breeds in which many health problems emerge. In addition to health complications, anatomical changes in their skull can also cause communication problems. It is known that people are able to understand the signals from dogs, but there has as yet been no research on whether it is negatively affected by brachycephaly. The aim of this diploma thesis was to determine (i) whether people recognize the visual signals of a brachycephalic dog as well as other breeds, (ii) according to which facial features of the dog people orientate and (iii) whether owners of brachycephalic breeds are more successful than owners of other dog breeds, or people without any dog. The hypotheses assumed for the recognition of visual signals of the brachycephalic dog compared to the control dog, (i) lower overall success in variously simulated situations, (ii) the relevant indicator for correct situation determination would be the eyes and (iii) brachycephalic breed owners will be more successful in understanding these dogs. Four different situations were simulated in a behavioural laboratory, in which two dog breeds were used. An experimental group consisted of individuals of a brachycephalic breed – boston terrier, and a control group jack russell terrier. Specific situations included: calling each dog by its name, dog reacting to playing with a ball, separation from the owner and dog being approached by a threatening stranger. After documenting the dogs in individual situations, photographs were created showing only the head and expression depicting the dog at the moment, which were then used in a prepared survey, the results of which were statistically evaluated. In this section, analysis using SAS, version 9.4, proc GLIMMIX was used. The results show that the influence of the breed was proved to determine the situation only in the case of a dog playing with a ball. In the boston terrier, only 13.7 % of respondents recognized the expression during this situation, whereas in the jack russell terrier 68.4 %. No differences were found in other situations. Orientation according to the eyes was the most frequent, followed by the ears, so in both cases no statistically significant difference was found between the experimental and control groups. However, owners of brachycephalic dogs tended to be more ear-oriented in the experimental group than other respondents. In the analysis of the influence of the ownership of brachycephalic dogs, no significant influence was found in the determination of individual situations. These results do not confirm the chosen hypotheses. It is also clear from the results that the ability to recognize the visual signals of the dog from photographs of the head is not a sufficient source of information, according to which people orient themselves when recognizing signals.
