Impact of point defects on stability and mechanical properties of nitrides and oxides

Abstract:

Nitridy jsou díky svým vynikajícím vlastnostem používány jako ochranné vrstvy různých nástrojů a mechanických komponent, dekorativní povlaky, elektrické kontakty a difuzní bariéry v elektronických zařízeních. I přes svůj obrovský technologický úspěch a význam ve vývoji super tvrdých materiálů však stále vyvolávají řadu otázek. Cílem této práce je komplexně prostudovat fázovou stabilitu nejvýznamnějších reprezentantů tvrdých materiálů. Pozornost je věnována zejména roli bodových defektů, které mohou podstatě ovlivnit vlastnosti materiálů a jsou nevyhnutelně přítomny v tenkých filmech. Kvantově-mechanické modelování, umožňující zkoumat nejrůznější fenomény a charakteristiky materiálů, se stalo důležitým protějškem experimentu a často používaným nástrojem v současné materiálové vědě. K analýze fázové stability významných tvrdých materiálů proto používáme teorii funkcionálu hustoty (DFT), implementovanou v jednom z nejmodernějších kvantově-mechanických kódů, Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP). Nejprve uvádíme základní koncepty DFT a stručně popisujeme fyzikální vlastnosti a aplikace vybraných binárních nitridů. V hlavní části práce jsou prezentovány ab initio výpočty zaměřené na fázovou stabilitu Al-N, Mo-N, Ta-N a Ti-N. Podrobně diskutovány jsou zejména strukturní parametry, dále pak vliv experimentálních podmínek během depozice a vliv bodových defektů na energiové vlastnosti těchto nitridových systémů.

Abstract:

Owing to their superior physical properties, nitrides are applied as wear-protection coatings for tools and mechanical components, decorative coatings, electrical contacts, and diffusion barriers in electronic devices. Despite their tremendous technological success and importance in the quest for super hard materials, a number of fundamental questions remain. This work aims to comprehensively investigate phase stability of the most prominent representatives of hard materials. Particular attention is paid to the role of point defects, which can largely affect materials properties and are unavoidably present in thin films. Allowing to study various phenomena and materials characteristics, quantum-mechanical modelling has become an important counterpart to experiment and a frequently adopted tool in modern materials science. Therefore, to gain an advanced insight into the phase stability of important hard materials, we employ the density functional theory (DFT) as implemented in a state-of-the art modelling code Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP). Firstly, basic concepts leading to modern formulation of DFT are covered and a brief summary of several selected binary nitrides physical properties and their applications is given. The central part of this work presents ab initio calculations on the phase stability of the Al-N, Mo-N, Ta-N, and Ti-N systems. Specifically, structural parameters, the impact of deposition conditions and the impact of point defects on the energetics of these nitrides are comprehensively discussed.
