Communication of blue-green infrastructure measures towards city dwellers

Abstract:

Modrozelená infrastruktura (MZI) se v posledních letech stává nedílnou součastí měst. Vzrostlo povědomí odborné veřejnosti o opatření a způsobech jeho technického řešení. Přetrvává ale stále problém v prosaditelnosti opatření. Jedním z důvodů je nedostatečné povědomí veřejnosti způsobené mimo jiné neefektivní komunikací s veřejností, nebo její úplnou absencí na úrovni jednotlivých obcí. Volba adekvátní komunikační metody je proto velmi důležitá pro úspěšnou realizaci opatření MZI. Cílem této práce proto bylo ověřit zájem obyvatel o konkrétní nástroje komunikace v oblasti MZI v rámci tří případových studiích. Spokojenost s vybranou formou komunikace a její míra dopadu byla hodnocena ve Svitavách, Lovosicích a Písku. Data o spokojinosti s články v místních novinách, respektive přednáškou a exkurzí byla získána z dotazníkových šetření, která probíhala kombinací online i osobního sběru. Pro analýzu dat byla využita základní deskriptivní statistika, stepwise logistické regresní analýzy, neparametrický test (Kruskal-Wallis test) a krabicové grafy. Ve všech tří případových studiích byly nejpreferovanějšími zdroji informací ze strany obyvatel dané obce: (i) noviny vydávané městem; (ii) webové stránky města; (iii) účet města na sociálních sítí. Dále byly potvrzeny vztahy mezi určitými sociodemografickými aspekty a preferencí komunikačních nástrojů. Potvrdilo se například, že noviny vydávané městem jsou preferované spíše staršími obyvateli, ale mají velký dopad na všechny generace. S oběma komunikačními metodami (článek a přednáška/exkurze) a získanými informacemi byli obyvatelé obcí spíše spokojeni. Výsledky studie mohou být také přínosem, jak pro odbornou veřejnost, tak pro menší města a obce, které plánují rozvíjet komunikaci se svými občany ohledně opatřeních MZI, ale i tvůrce politik.

Abstract:

Blue-green infrastructure (BGI) has become an integral part of cities in recent years. The professional public's awareness of the measure and the methods of its technical solution has increased. However, there is still a problem with the enforceability of the measures. One of the reasons is insufficient public awareness caused, among other things, by ineffective communication with the public, or its complete absence at the level of individual municipalities. The choice of an adequate communication method is therefore very important for the successful implementation of BGI measures. The aim of this work was therefore to verify the residents' interest in specific communication tools in the field of BGI within the framework of three case studies. Satisfaction with the chosen form of communication and its level of impact was assessed in Svitavy, Lovosice and Písek. Data on satisfaction with articles in local newspapers, or with the lecture and excursion were obtained from questionnaire surveys, which were carried out through a combination of online and personal collection. Basic descriptive statistics, stepwise logistic regression analysis, non-parametric test (Kruskal-Wallis test) and box plots were used for data analysis. In all three case studies, the most preferred sources of information by the inhabitants of a given municipality were: (i) newspapers published by the city; (ii) the city's website; (iii) the city's account on social networks. Furthermore, the relationships between certain socio-demographic aspects and the preference of communication tools were confirmed. For example, it was confirmed that newspapers published by the city are preferred by older residents, but have a great impact on all generations. The inhabitants of the municipalities were rather satisfied with both communication methods (article and lecture/excursion) and the information obtained. The results of the study can also be beneficial both for the professional public and for smaller cities and municipalities that plan to develop communication with their citizens regarding BGI measures, as well as policy makers.
