The male teacher is not like the female teacher - Situation of male teachers in kindergartens

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na muže, kteří vykonávají jedno z nejvíce feminizovaných povolání v České republice, na muže pracující v mateřských školách. Tito muži narušují 'normální' genderové biografie, protože si vybrali povolání, kde dominují především ženy. Provedený kvalitativní výzkum je založený na sedmnácti polostrukturovaných rozhovorech s muži-učiteli a zúčastněném pozorování ve vybraných mateřských školách. Tato práce odhaluje cestu mužů k zaměstnání učitele v mateřské škole, zkušenosti těchto mužů a genderové uspořádání tohoto feminizovaného povolání. Bylo zjištěno, že situace mužů-učitelů v mateřských školách je plná různých protichůdností. Muži-učitelé identifikují rozdíly mezi muži a ženami a pracují s tímto rozlišováním, zároveň jsou si ale vědomi, že tento dualismus v realitě takto jednoduše nefunguje. V mateřských školách je velká poptávka po mužích. Jsou přijímáni s nadšením a očekáváním změny. Zároveň ale čelí nejednoznačným reakcím ve spojitosti s genderovými stereotypy dnešní doby. Nicméně, obecně muži-učitelé v mateřských školách nejsou penalizováni za to, že narušují genderové normy a nejsou vystaveni nepřátelství jako například ženy v povoláních, kde dominují muži.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on men who work in one of the most feminized occupation in the Czech Republic, on men working in kindergartens. These men disrupt the "normal" gender biographies, because they have chosen the occupation that is predominantly occupied by women. The research of this thesis is based on qualitative research that includes seventeen semi-structured interviews with male-teachers and participant observation in selected kindergartens. This thesis detects the journey of men to the profession of teacher in kindergarten, experience of these men and the gender arrangement in this feminized occupation. It was discovered that situation of male-teachers in kindergartens is full of various contradictions. Male-teachers identify differences between men and women and they work with this differentiation but simultaneously they are aware that this dualism does not work in reality so easily. There is also a large demand for men in kindergartens; they are taking in with enthusiasm and expectation of change. But at the same time, they face ambiguous reactions in connection with gender stereotypes of today. In general, however, male-teachers in kindergartens are not so penalized for disturbing gender norms and they are not exposed to animosity like, for example, they female counterparts in occupations where men dominate.
