Nuclear proliferation in South Asia. Motives and consequences.

Abstract:

Práce má charakter komparativní studie. Jejím cílem je analýza motivů jaderné proliferace v jižní Asii za použití teorie Tří modelů motivů jaderné proliferace Scotta D. Sagana. Hlavním cílem diplomové práce je určit aplikovatelnost modelu bezpečnostního, normativního a modelu domácí politiky na případy jaderné proliferace v Indii a Pákistánu. Vedlejším cílem práce je vyvodit důsledky jaderné proliferace pro vzájemné vztahy obou zemí a pro jejich bezpečnost. V teoretické části jsou představeny základní pojmy související s tématem jaderné proliferace, mezinárodní institucionální zakotvení problematiky a teoretické modely motivů jaderné proliferace. Empirická část práce se zabývá historicko-politickým vývojem vzájemných vztahů Indie a Pákistánu a jejich cestou k jadernému programu a vývoji jaderných zbraní. Dále jsou porovnány případy jaderné proliferace Indie a Pákistánu a je posouzena aplikovatelnost Saganových modelů, jež je shrnuta v tabulce. V závěru práce jsou vyvozeny důsledky jaderné proliferace pro vzájemné vztahy Indie a Pákistánu a pro jejich bezpečnost.

Abstract:

This thesis is a comparative study. The objective of this thesis is to analyze nuclear proliferation in South Asia applying Three models of motives for acquiring nuclear weapons by Scott D. Sagan. The main objective of the thesis is to determine the level of applicability of these models in cases of nuclear proliferation in India and Pakistan. The following objective is to derive consequences of nuclear proliferation for mutual relations and security in both countries. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces basic terminology related to the topic of nuclear proliferation, international institutional anchoring of the issue and theoretical models of nuclear proliferation. The empirical part deals with the development of mutual historic and political relations of India and Pakistan and their path towards the nuclear program and towards the development of nuclear weapons. Furthermore, the cases of nuclear proliferation of India and Pakistan are compared and the applicability of Sagan’s models is assessed. The results are then summarized in a chart. In the end, the consequences of nuclear proliferation for mutual relations and security of India and Pakistan are concluded.
