Fauna of gravel stream bed sediments with a respect to harpacticoid community

Abstract:

Dnové sedimenty jsou nedílnou součástí říčního ekosystému a důležitým biotopem pro zoobentos. Zatímco ve světě je jejich studiu věnována velká pozornost, v České republice existuje dosud jen několik málo prací. V této práci jsem se snažila (1) zprovoznit kvantitativní metody v našich podmínkách, (2) popsat a vysvětlit prostorovou a časovou variabilitu společenstva bezobratlých a druhů plazivek a (3) najít souvislosti mezi morfologickými vlastnostmi bezobratlých a jejich výskytem v sedimentu. Dnové sedimenty byly studovány na ritrálním úseku řeky Loučky, štěrkovitém toku 4. řádu s přirozeným průtokovým režimem. K odběru byla použita metoda freeze coring. Vzorky byly odebrány jako 10ti centimetrové hloubkové vrstvy od povrchu dna až do hloubky 70 cm, na třech stanovištích s odlišnými hydrologickými podmínkami (proudnice, začátek a konec štěrkové lavice). Odběr byl opakován 5x během dvou let při nižších vodních stavech. Vzorky byly zpracovány metodou plavení, která je podrobně popsána. Byly stanoveny denzity vyšších taxonomických skupin a druhů plazivek, velikostní složení sedimentu a obsah organického uhlíku. Hodnocení dat zahrnovalo přímé i nepřímé ordinační metody, regresní stromy a analýzu hnízdovitosti. Společenstvo bylo z velké části tvořeno permanentní epigeickou meiofaunou. Jeho variabilitu vysvětlovaly nejlépe prostorové proměnné (hloubka, pozice v korytě). Denzity a diverzita klesaly s rostoucí hloubkou a nejnižší byly na konci lavice. Hloubkové uspořádání bylo relativně stálé, ale optimum se v zimním období posouvalo hlouběji do sedimentu. Tento vliv byl výraznější na štěrkové lavici a u plazivek. Plazivky se objevovaly v hojném počtu především za vyššího průtoku. Podíl jemného sedimentu nebyl pro faunu limitující, naopak zde byla tendence k pozitivnímu vztahu. Množství organického uhlíku bylo velmi variabilní a mírně klesalo s rostoucí hloubkou. Náhodně docházelo k akumulaci organického materiálu, což významně přispělo k vysvětlení variability společenstva. Taxonomické skupiny měly různé hloubkové preference, což se projevilo i silně hnízdovitým uspořádáním v hloubkovém profilu v závislosti na šířce těla. Morfologické rozdíly mezi druhy plazivek nevedly zřejmě k rozdílům v distribuci v substrátu, ale při nízkých teplotách se snižoval překryv druhů v hloubkovém profilu.

Abstract:

Bed sediments are an integral part of river ecosystems and a habitat of major importance for zoobenthic community. However, there has been a sharp lack of research in bed sediments of streams and rivers in the Czech Republic. In this thesis I aimed to (1) put quantitative methods into service, (2) describe and explain the spatial and temporal variability of the invertebrate community and in particular the harpacticoid community, and (3) find a relation between morphological features of invertebrate taxa and their occurrence in bed sediment. The bed sediment was studied in the rithral reach of the Loučka River, a gravel-bed 4th order stream with natural discharge. Samples were taken by the freeze coring method as 10 cm depth layers from the bed surface down to the 70 cm depth, at three habitats with different hydrological conditions (streamline, head and tail of a gravel bar), and on five occasions with average or lower daily discharge during two years. The samples were processed by an elutriation method which is described in details. Densities of higher taxa and harpacticoid species, grain size composition and organic carbon content were assessed. Data were evaluated using direct and indirect ordinations, regression trees and an analysis of nestedness. The community was composed mainly of epigeic permanent meiofauna. Densities and diversity decreased with increasing depth and were lowest at the tail of the bar. The found depth pattern was relatively stable but the depth optima shifted deeper into the sediment in the cold season. This appeared particularly at the gravel bar and in the harpacticoid community. Harpacticoid abundances were high especially at higher discharge. The proportion of fine grain sediment was not a limiting factor for invertebrates but on the contrary there was a sign of positive linkage. The organic carbon content was variable and slightly decreased with increasing depth. Its high and randomly accumulated amounts significantly contributed to the explained variability in community composition. Invertebrate taxa showed different depth preferences forming a strong nested pattern in the depth profile according to their body width. Differences in morphology between harpacticoid species did not lead to different their distributions within the sediment. However, at low temperatures the overlap in species occurrences in the depth profile tended to decrease.
