Peshmerga vs. ISIS - the possible impact on the complete independence of Iraqi Kurdistan

Abstract:

Práce je věnována aktuálně nejdůležitějším pojmům spojených s iráckým Kurdistánem, jež spolu v konečném důsledku nepochybně souvisejí. Snaží se čtenáři, i skrze přihlédnutí do historie, osvětlit vznik a současné postavení kurdské armády Pešmerga, hrající v dnešní době klíčovou roli v boji proti extremistům Islámského státu. Dále si klade za cíl poukázat na množství problémů, způsobených nejen oslabením země vojenskými akcemi, ale také neshodami v rámci státu Irák a špatným fungováním Kurdské regionální vlády. V neposlední řadě je cílem práce zmapovat aktuální vývoj kurdských snah o uznání úplné nezávislosti na Iráku. Shrnuje také působení kurdských bojovníků napříč historií a nastiňuje tak čtenáři situaci před počátkem 20. století. Zmiňuje původ a význam slova, jenž označuje kurdskou armádu, přičemž dále přechází k historickým momentům důležitých ve vývoji Pešmergy. V neposlední řadě popisuje současnou situaci jednotek Pešmergy. Jsou shrnuty obecné základní informace jejího fungování doplněné o část, jež přibližuje postavení žen v rámci armády. Dále práce zkoumá vliv kurdské armády na společnost. Součástí je také zmapování průběhu hlavních vojenských střetů Pešmergy s bojovníky samozvaného Islámského státu včetně související mezinárodní pomoci a podpory. Závěrečná část práce je věnována současné době. Zabývá problémy, se kterými se Kurdistán momentálně potýká, a to nejen ekonomickými, ale také společenskými a vládními a poté uvádí vývoj státoprávních snah Kurdistánu včetně postojů vybraných zahraničních států a zmiňuje možné komplikace s ohledem na aktuální dění.

Abstract:

This thesis is focuses on the most important concepts related to Iraqi Kurdistan, which are together connected undoubtedly. It tries to clarify the origin and current status of the Kurdish Peshmerga army, playing nowadays a key role in the fight against the extremists of the Islamic State. Furthermore, it aims to highlight the infinite number of problems caused by weakening the country due to military actions. Additionally disagreements within the State of Iraq as well as the malfunctioning government of the KRG also contribute to these problems. The aim is to map the current situation of Iraqi Kurdistan. The second chapter summarizes the activity of Kurdish fighters throughout the history and outlines situation before the beginning of the 20th century. The next chapter, first mentions the origin and meaning of the word, which refers to the Kurdish army. Subsequently, the point is to describe historical events that are important in the development of Peshmerga. The fourth chapter describes the current situation of Peshmerga units. It summarizes the basic general information about its functioning, accompanied by part outlining the position of women within the army. The thesis also examines the impact of Peshmerga on society. It also includes a mapping of major military conflicts of Peshmerga fighters against the self-proclaimed Islamic State, including the related international assistance and support. The last two chapters are devoted to the present time. The fifth chapter deals with the economical, social and governmental issues that Kurdistan has to currently face. The final section then presents the development of Kurdistan constitutional efforts, including the positions of selected foreign countries. It also discusses possible complications on acount of current events.
