Multinational Corporations and Nation-states: Partners, Adversaries, or Autonomous Actors?

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá měnící se povahou vztahů mezi dvěmi kategoriemi aktérů ve světovém systému: národními státy a nadnárodními korporacemi. Cílem práce je zjistit, zda se nadnárodní korporace staly natolik autonomními a nekontrolovatelnými aktéry, že zbavily národní státy jejich základních znaků: území, obyvatelstva a vlády. K ověření této hypotézy práce zkoumá efektivitu a efektivnost kotrolních nástrojů, které si oba aktéři zachovali, a zda tyto nástroje ovlivňují ony tři záklaní charakteristiky konceptu národního státu. Úvodní kapitoly představují definice a základní charakteristiky národních států a nadnárodních korporací a také stručně charakterizují vývoj jejich vzájemných vztahů od postvestfálského systému do éry globalizace a cyberspace reflektovaných v hlavních dílech z oblasti mezinárodní politiky. Analýza kontrolních nástrojů, jež následuje, slouží jako základ pro autentickou klasifikaci vztahů vznikajících a existujících mezi uvedenými dvěma aktéry. Základní modely interakce klasifikované jako spolupráce, konfliktní vztah, nezávislost a vzájemná závislost poskytují celkový pohled na komplexní oblast vztahů mezi nadnárodními korporacemi a národními státy.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the changing nature of relationships between two categories of actors in the world system: nation-states and multinational corporations. The aim of the study is to examine whether multinational enterprises have become such autonomous and uncontrollable actors that nation-states have been deprived of their founding characteristics: territory, population and government. In order to find out the thesis looks into the efficiency and effectiveness of the means of control preserved by both actors and how these means affect the three key components of the concept of the nation-state. The initial chapters provide definitions and basic characteristics of nation-states and multinational corporations as well as a brief insight into the development of their mutual relationships from the post-Westphalian system to the globalization and cyberspace era reflected in major international politics writings. The following analysis of means of control serves as a basis for an authentic classification of the relationship patterns arising and existing between the two actors. The major interaction patterns classified as cooperation, confrontation, independence and interdependence provide an overlook of the complex area of the multinational enterprises – nation-states relationships.
