Potential of restoration efforts to support brown trout populations

Abstract:

Degradace vodních toků vlivem antropogenních zásahů má zásadní vliv na fluviální habitaty a organismy, které v nich žijí. Typickým příkladem je pstruh obecný (Salmo trutta), ekonomicky významná ryba z řádu lososovitých (Salmonidae), jejichž původní populace zaznamenávají v posledních letech výrazný pokles. První část této teoretické práce shrnuje základní abiotické faktory, hrající roli v habitatové preferenci pstruha (teplota, substrát, hloubka a rychlost proudění vody, úkryt). Abiotické faktory jsou navíc doplněny o biotické složky habitatu (potrava, kompetice a predace) pro lepší pochopení ekologické niky pstruha. Část druhá navrhuje revitalizační opatření založena především na zvýšení heterogenity fyzického habitatu. Dle různých potřeb pstruha obecného jsou revitalizace v této práci rozděleny na obnovu břehové vegetace, komplexnosti koryta pomocí strukturních prvků, migrační prostupnosti a míst k rozmnožování - trdlišť. Jelikož součástí úspěšné revitalizace je i monitoring a zhodnocení vývoje opatření, třetí část práce je zaměřena právě na tuto metodickou komponentu managementu obnovy vodních toků.

Abstract:

Degradation of watercourses due to anthropogenic interventions has a major impact on fluvial habitats and the organisms that live in them. Typical example of such impact is a brown trout (Salmo trutta), an economically important fish of the order Salmonidae, whose native populations have declined significantly in recent years. The first part of this thesis summarizes the abiotic factors playing a role in the habitat preferences of trout (temperature, substrate, depth and water velocity, shelter). These abiotic factors are supplemented by biotic components of the habitat (food, competition and predation) for a better understanding of the brown trout ecological niche. The second part is describing restoration techniques mostly based on increasing of physical habitat heterogeneity. According to the different needs of brown trout, the restorations in this work are divided into the restoration of: riparian vegetation, the riverbed complexity by addition of instream structures, migratory permeability and spawning grounds. As part of successful restoration is also monitoring and assesment of changes in specific measures, the third part of thesis is aimed on this methodological component of watercourse renewal management.
