Success of the Goncourt prize in Czech readers

Abstract:

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to examine the reception of the most known French literary award, Goncourt prize, upon the Czech reader. It deals with a different view-ing of the concrete writings in the French and in the Czech literary milieu. It also searches the responses if there is a manual to write a successful novel in the French and the Czech literary milieu. In the preface of this work the Goncourt prize is generally introduced as its history and the most known novels awarded. The first chapter is a reflection about the strategy of the suc-cess of the French novels directly in France. Can a successful novel be made according to a universal model (theme, style, length, etc.)? Is this prize automatically the guarantee of the success? In the second chapter two contemporary novels which obtained the Goncourt prize are introduced and more examined. The main part is dedicated to the Czech reader's milieu and the reception of the French prose upon the Czech readers. The third chapter focuses on the strategy of the reader´s success by the perspective of the Czech publishers and translators. In the form of the survey the opin-ions of the Czech readers are found out. Does the universal instruction how to be successful in the Czech milieu exist? Next part focuses on two awarded French novels and their different reception in the Czech and French literary milieu. Are these two models of perception similar? And if not, what is their main difference? In the end all these results are evaluated and summarized.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá recepci nejslavnějšího francouzského literárního ocenění, Goncourtovy ceny, na českého čtenáře. Zabývá se rozdílným vnímáním francouzské prózy, ve francouzském a českém literárním prostředí. Hledá také otázky, zda existuje manuál na úspěšný román ve francouzském a českém prostředí. V úvodu je obecně představena Goncourtova cena, její historie a nejslavnější díla. První kapitola je zamyšlením nad strategií čtenářského úspěchu francouzských románů přímo ve Francii. Dá se úspěšný román vytvořit dle obecně platného modelu (téma, styl, délka atd.)? Je toto ocenění již samo o sobě zárukou úspěchu románu? Ve druhé kapitole jsou představeny dva současné romány, které obdržely Goncourtovu cenu a jsou podrobněji rozebrány. Hlavní část je věnována českému čtenářskému prostředí a recepci francouzských děl u českých čtenářů. Třetí kapitola je zaměřena na strategii čtenářského úspěchu v Čechách z po-hledu českých nakladatelů a překladatelů. Formou ankety jsou zjištěny i názory českých čtenářů. Existuje všeobecný návod, jak uspět s novým románem v českém prostředí? Další část je zaměřena na dva oceněné francouzské romány a jejich rozdílnou recepci v českém a francouzském literárním prostředí. Jsou tyto dva modely vnímání podobné? A pokud ne, v čem se hlavně liší? V závěru jsou tyto výsledky a postřehy vyhodnoceny a shrnuty.
