"Plus size” actresses and the pressure on the physical appearance of actresses in the Czech theatre environment of present day

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá kontroverzním tématem tzv. plus size hereček na českých profesionálních jevištích a tlakem na fyzický vzhled hereček v současném českém divadelním prostředí. Ve své práci se budu opírat o kvantitativní sociologický výzkum, který si klade za cíl zjistit, zda jsou herečky, které nesplňovaly nebo nesplňují obecně uznávané ideály krásy (ve smyslu tendenčně vnímané otázky „jak má správná herečka vypadat“), v herecké profesi diskriminovány kvůli svému fyzickému vzhledu. V průzkumu také zjišťuji, zda se tato diskriminace vyskytuje i u herců a zda je aktivně podporovaná už na hereckých školách.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the controversial topic of plus size actresses on Czech professional stages and the pressure on the physical appearance of actresses in the environment of contemporary Czech theatre. In my thesis, I will rely on quantitative sociological research, which aims to find out whether actresses who did not or do not meet generally accepted ideals of beauty (in the sense of the tendentiously perceived question " how a proper actress should look like") are discriminated against in the acting profession because of their physical appearance. In my research I also investigate whether this discrimination also occurs among actors and whether it is actively promoted as early as in acting schools.
