Beer or sake? An analysis of the influence of Japanese culture and manga on comics in German-speaking countries

Abstract:

The subject of this thesis is an analysis of the influence of Japanese comics, so-called manga, on comics from German-speaking countries and vice versa. The thesis is divided into two main parts, a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part deals with the explanation of important terminology and the introduction of comics theory necessary to understand and then evaluate the content of the thesis. This part is also accompanied by a brief overview of the origins and history of Western comics and manga and an introduction to their respective genres. The second, practical part of this thesis is introduced by an analysis of the different features of Western and Eastern comics from the early to the late 20th century, followed by an examination of the integration of Japanese pop culture into German-speaking countries and the phenomenon of the westernization of Japan. The purpose of this section is to point out the specific features of manga in selected titles of German comics, namely the so-called "germanga" of the last two decades, and to present a number of manga adaptations of German literary works. The main aim of this thesis is to show how the rising popularity of manga has had a great influence on the style and narrative tendencies of German-language comics.

Abstract:

Obsahem této diplomové práce je analýza vlivu japonských komiksů, tzv. mangy na komiksy z německy mluvícího prostředí a naopak. Práce je rozdělena na dvě hlavní části, a to na část teoretickou a praktickou. Teoretická část se zabývá vysvětlením důležité terminologie a představením komiksové teorie, potřebné k porozumění a následnému zhodnocení obsahu práce. Tato část je také doplněna o stručný přehled vzniku a historie západních komiksů a mangy a o představení jejich příslušných žánrů. Úvodem k druhé, praktické části této práce je analýza rozdílných rysů západních a východních komiksů od počátku až do konce 20. století, načež následuje zkoumání integrace japonské popkultury do německy mluvících zemí a fenomén westernizace Japonska. Účelem této časti je poukázat na specifické rysy mangy na vybraných titulech německého komiksu, konkrétně tzv. germangy z posledních dvou desetiletí a představit řadu manga adaptací německé literatury. Hlavním cílem této práce je ukázat, jak velký vliv stoupající popularita mangy měla na styl a narativní tendence německojazyčných komiksů.
