Perception of Marriage, Fertility and Parenthood in the Czech Republic at the Beginning of the Second Millenium

Abstract:

Počátkem devadesátých let došlo v České republice k výraznému snížení demografických měr sňatečnosti a porodnosti. Tato práce se na tento jev dívá optikou teorie reflexivní modernity Ulricha Becka, kterou propojuje s konceptem druhé demografické tranzice. Současné trendy v demografickém chování českého obyvatelstva poté dává do souvislosti s demografickými procesy, které proběhly v západní Evropě během šedesátých a sedmdesátých let a v jejich kontextu se zabývá současnými trendy v reprodukčním chování České populace Vychází z předpokladu, že podmínkou pro transformaci tradičního pojetí rodiny je přítomnost rozvinuté kapitalistické tržní ekonomiky. Ve středu zájmu se pak nachází postoje obyvatelstva k jevům nesezdaného soužití, poklesu hodnoty manželství, stoupajícího počtu rozvodů a různých faktorů na sňatečnost a porodnost V praktické části na základě statistické analýzy dat souboru zjišťuje postoje Českého obyvatelstva k jevům a trendům reprodukčního chování v ČR. Zabývá se zejména otázkami ohledně partnerského soužití a plození dětí a na jejichž základě se poté ptá zda v České republice opravdu dochází k procesu druhé demografické tranzice.

Abstract:

In the beginning of the 90s the Czech Republic got through a big drop in the marriage and birth rate. This work views this phenomenon from the point of the Theory of Reflexive Modernity (Ulrich Beck), which we combine with the concept of the Second Demographic Transition. It also puts in context the contemporary trends in demographic behavior of the Czech population and the demographic processes of the 60s and 70s in Europe, and deals on their base with the contemporary reproductive manner of the Czech population. We build on the premise that the precondition for the transformation of the traditional concept of family is the presence of developed capitalistic economy. In the centre of our interest figure then the attitudes of the population towards cohabitation, the drop in the value of marriage, the rising number of divorces and various other influences on marriage and birth rate. The empiric part of this work, on the base of the statistic analysis of the sample, tries to find the attitudes of the Czech population towards the phenomena and trends of the reproductive manner in the Czech Republic. It considers namely the questions of common life of couples and the reproduction, which inspires it to further question Is the Czech Republic really coming through the Second Demographic Transition?
