Surface changes of small piedmont glaciers on James Ross Island over the past 40 years

Abstract:

Malé pevninské ledovce jsou jedním z nejcitlivějších ukazatelů klimatické změny, a proto zvyšující se roční teplota vzduchu od druhé poloviny 20. století má na malé ledovcové systémy v oblasti Antarktického poloostrova bezpochyby nemalý vliv. Do této široké tématiky spadá i tato studie. Práce se zabývá změnami plochy a nadmořské výšky povrchu dvou úpatních ledovců na poloostrově Ulu v letech 1979/80-2016. Historické letecké snímky a digitální modely terénu byly zpracovány za účelem extrakce výškový rozdílů a průměrné roční změny povrchu ledovce Triangular, Lachman a San José v časových intervalech 1979-2006 a 2006-2016. Výsledky byly porovnány s obdobnými výzkumy zaměřujícími se na ledovce v této oblasti. Byl detekován zrychlený trend ablace ledovců mezi rokem 1979-2006. Povrchy spojených ledovců Lachman a San José se průměrně snižovaly o 1,0 m za rok a u ledovce Trinagular se toto tempo snížilo na hodnotu 0,4. Naopak během posledního desetiletí zahrnutém v tomto výzkumu se na ledovcích projevovalo zpomalení ablačních procesů v důsledku chladnějšího klimatu v letech 1999-2014.

Abstract:

Small land-terminating glaciers are one of the most sensitive indicators of climate change, and therefore rising annual air temperatures since the second half of the 20th century undoubtedly have a significant impact on small glacier systems in the Antarctic Peninsula. This study also falls into this broad topic. The work deals with changes in the area and altitude of the surface of two piedmont glaciers on the Ulu Peninsula in the years 1979/80-2016. Historical aerial photographs and digital elevation models were processed to extract elevation differences and the average annual surface change of the Triangular, Lachman, and San José glaciers between 1979-2006 and 2006-2016. The results were compared with similar research on glaciers in the area. An accelerated trend of glacier ablation between 1979-2006 was detected. The surface area of the combined Lachman and San José glaciers decreased on average by 1,0 m per year, and for the Triangular glacier, this rate decreased to 0,4 m per year. On the contrary, over the last decade included in this research, the glaciers have seen a slowdown in ablation processes, due to the colder climate of 1999-2014.
