Philanthropy in medieval economic thought

Abstract:

Předmětem diplomové práce „Dobročinnost v ekonomických úvahách středověku“ je zachycení dosud značně rozptýlených postřehů a názorů různých autorů, týkající se této problematiky, a syntetizovat je v ucelenější pohled. Na začátku práce se věnuji historickému pozadí - středověké společnosti a vývoji charitativní činnosti. V další části je zachycen vliv středověkých křesťanských učenců na vybrané ekonomické problémy, a jak jejich teorie ovlivnily charitativní činnost – způsob dávání darů a péči o chudé.

Abstract:

The goal of the submitted thesis: “Philanthropy in medieval economic thought” is to collect still significantly scattered observations and opinions of different authors on this subject and to synthesize it all in one coherent perspective. At the beginning of my work I deal with the historical background - the society in the Middle Ages and the development of charity. The next part shows the influence of medieval christian scholars on particular economic problems and what impact their theories had on charity work – the way of giving gifts and care of the poor.
