The Changes in Construction of Media Portrayal of Threat: Comparative Content Analysis

Abstract:

Předmětem bakalářské práce je popis a porovnání proměny mediální konstrukce obrazu ohrožení u dvou českých deníků náležejících rozdílným politickým režimům, Mladé fronty z roku 1988 a MF Dnes roku 2010. Základními teoretickými rámci jsou teorie rizikové společnosti, koncept ontologického bezpečí, teorie governmentality a mediální logika. Práce vychází z teoretických konceptů mediálních studií jako sociální konstrukce reality nebo agenda setting. Práce využívá metodu kvantitativní obsahové analýzy doplněné o interpretativní čtení textu. Mediální obraz ohrožení je analyzován na základě předpokladu, že média mají potenciální schopnost vzbuzovat strach a úzkost. Mediální konstrukce ohrožení se v komparaci zvolených dvou období jeví jako odlišná, přičemž význam fenoménu strach v demokratické společnosti výrazně vzrostl.

Abstract:

The objective of bachelor thesis is to describe and compare the changes in construction of media portrayl of threat between two Czech daily newspaper belonging to different political regimes, the Mladá fronta in 1988 and MF Dnes in 2010. Key theoretical koncept are the theory of risk society, governmentality, the concept of ontological safety and media logic. The theoretical basis of this paper comprises of media concepts as social construction of reality or agenda setting. The thesis uses a quantitative method of content analysis, which is supplemented with interpretative reading of the text. The media image of threat is analyzed based on the assumption that the media have the potential ability to cause fear and anxiety. Media construction of risk in comparison with two selected periods appears to be different, the significance of the phenomenon of fear in a democratic society has increased signally.
