SIFI - systemically important financial institutions, their substance, importance and impact on the banking system of the EU

Abstract:

The diploma thesis concerns itself with the issue of systematically important financial institutions (SIFIs) with a focus on the European banking sector. The thesis will provide a comparative analysis between the globally established framework for the supervision of SIFIs with the one currently being implemented by the European union, as well as a comparative analysis between individual approaches to the framework implementation among individual member states, with the aim of identifying differences and from them arising deficiencies or advantages. Furthermore, the thesis will provide an analysis of the impact this implementation has on the European banking sector and tries to identify possible challenges that could be detrimental to its efficiency in the future. The overall goal of the thesis is to provide a complex overview of the of the current EU’s SIFIs supervisions framework, evaluate its efficiency and identify possible weaknesses.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá problematikou systémovo významných finančných inštitúcií (SIFIs) so zameraním na bankový sektor Európskej únie. Práca poskytne komparatívnu analýzu medzi globálne ustanoveným rámcom pre dohľad nad SIFI a tým v súčasnosti implementovaným Európskou úniou, rovnako ako komparáciu medzi individuálnymi prístupmi k tejto implementácii na úrovni jednotlivých členských štátov, za účelom identifikácie možných rozdielov a z nich plynúcich výhod alebo nedostatkov. Nad to práca ponúkne analýzu dopadov zavedenia rámca na európsky bankový sektor a pokúsi sa identifikovať možné prekážky, ktoré majú potenciál znížiť jeho efektivitu do budúcnosti. Celkovým cieľom práce je poskytnúť komplexný obraz súčasného stavu rámca dohľadu EÚ nad SIFIs, vyhodnotiť jeho efektivitu a identifikovať potencionálne nedostatky.
