V průběhu meiotické rekombinace dochází za pomoci evolučně konzervovaného proteinu Spo11 k samovolnému vzniku dvouřetězcových zlomů (DSBs) a k jejich následné opravě zahrnující překřížení homologních chromozómů. Neschopnost tvorby DSBs se chromozómy mohou náhodně segregovat, což může vést ke smrti dceřinných buněk. Meiotic recombination events encompass the formation of self-inflicted DNA double stranded breaks (DSBs), catalyzed by the evolutionarily conserved Spo11 protein and the subsequent repair of the DSBs, ensuring that there is at least one DNA crossover (CO) event per chromosome pair.
