Neoformalist Analysis of the film Detention

Abstract:

V předkládané práci se zabývám analýzou slasherového filmu Vrah zůstal po škole (2011; r. Joseph Kahn) v kontextu postmoderního hororu a jeho sebereflexivity. Zatímco film získal největší reflexi s hlediska svých postmoderních sklonů (intertextuální strategie, sebeironie, hybridita), nahlížím na něho především jako na komplexní systém, v jehož hranicích je sebereflexivní složka pouze součástí většího celku. Jako vhodnou pro takový typ uvažování aplikuji při rozboru filmu tzv. neoformalistickou filmovou analýzu, jak ji představila Kristin Thompsonová. Tvrdím, že se zvolený film řídí principem přesycenosti, což následně ukazuji pomocí analýzy jeho vyprávění (s důrazem na sebereflexivitu) a stylu. Docházím k závěru, že se princip přesycenosti ve stejné míře projevuje jak ve strategiích ztěžujících porozumění děje, tak ve strategiích, které pomáhají divákovi se v něm lépe orientovat. Pro slashery atypicky spletitý způsob vedení divácké aktivity je navíc přesycen velkým množstvím sebereflexivních odkazů a komentářů, což je důvodem pro výše zmíněnou nehlubokou reflexi snímku. Navzdory očividným a neskrytým sebereflexivním tendencím, pro které analyzovaný film byl často považován za následovníka sebereflivního slasheru Vřískot (1996; r. Wes Craven), se během rozboru stává překvapivým odhalením skutečnost, že film vykazuje větší nezávislost vyprávění od projevů sebereflexity, než je tomu ve Vřískotu a jiných představitelích estetiky neo-slasherů.

Abstract:

The study analyses film Detention (2011, dir. Joseph Kahn) in the context of postmodern horror and its self-reflexivity. While the film has gained the greatest reflection in terms of its postmodern tendencies (intertextual strategies, self-irony, hybridity), I examine it primarily as a complex system within which the self-reflexive component is only part of a larger whole. I use the neoformalist approach presented by Kristin Thompson as a suitable tool for this type of analysis. I argue the film follows the principle of oversaturation, which I then show by analysing its narration (with an emphasis on its self-reflexivity) and style. I conclude that the principle of oversaturation is equally reflected in strategies that make it difficult to understand the film, as well as in strategies that help the viewer better understand it. In addition, the complex way of conducting viewer activity (uncommon for slasher film) is also oversaturated by a multitude of self-reflexive references and commentary, which is the reason for the above-mentioned superficial reflection of the film. Despite the obvious and unconcealed self-reflexive tendencies for which the film was often considered a successor of the self-reflexive slasher Scream (1996, dir. Wes Craven), the surprising revelation based on the analysis is that the film exhibits greater narrative independence from self-reflexivity than Scream and other representatives of neo-slasher aesthetics.
