Disappearance of public space in the United States during the 20th century

Abstract:

Tato přehledová studie se zabývá vývojem a změnami veřejného prostoru amerických měst ve 20. století. Pozornost je věnována vývojovým trendům, které vedly ke vzniku moderních měst, zejména pak vlivu modernismu a funkcionalismu, a jakým způsobem se tyto trendy podepsaly na podobě amerických měst a jejich veřejného prostoru. Práce vychází z velké části z díla Williama Whyta, jeho pozorování veřejného prostoru v New Yorku, které dalo vzniknout studii „Street Life Project“. Dále pak vychází z díla Jana Gehla a jeho poznatků o fungování veřejného prostoru, díla Lyn Lofland a jejích zjištění o fungování „světa cizinců“ ve městě a díla Jane Jacobs a jejích zásad kvalitního veřejného prostoru. Práce zkoumá, jak je v amerických městech 20. století nakládáno s veřejným prostorem, jakým způsobem je tento prostor privatizován, zabezpečen, jak je na něj dohlíženo a jaký k němu mají obyvatelé města vztah.

Abstract:

This overview study deals with development and changes to the public space of american cities in 20th century. Attention is paid to development trends that led to creation of modern cities, especially modernism and functionalism, and how these trends left their mark on the image of american cities and their public space. This thesis is mostly base on works of William Whyte, whose observations of public space in New York gave birth the „Street Life Project“ study. The thesis is also based on works of Jan Gehl and his insight of inner workings of public space, works of Lyn Lofland and her findings about the „world of strangers“ in the city and works of Jane Jacobs and her principles of quality public space. The thesis aims to find out how 20th american century cities treat the public space, how is this space privatised, secured, viewed and what relationship do inhabitants of the city have towards it.
