Social Integration of Japanese Migrants in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá sociální integrací Japonců žijících v České republice. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jak Japonci vnímají svůj život v České republice, a prozkoumat jejich zkušenosti v tomto prostředí. Kvalitativní výzkum (provedený na základě semi-strukturovaných rozhovorů) byl založen na konceptu čtyřdimenzionálního modelu sociální integrace, který navrhli němečtí sociologové Bosswick a Heckmann. Pro analýzu a interpretaci dat byla použita metoda interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy (IPA). Z dostupných statistických údajů o japonské populaci je možné vysledovat výrazné genderové nerovnosti, které jsou ve srovnání s jinými národnostmi v České republice ojedinělé. Tato disertace dává tyto nerovnosti do širších souvislostí ve vztahu k různým typům japonských migrantů. Ti mohou být rozděleni do tří skupin, které se od sebe navzájem liší ve způsobu života a v tom, jak intenzivní je jejich kontakt s českou majoritou. Zvláštní pozornost byla věnována mladým japonským ženám, které opouští tradiční roli ženy a manželky v japonské společnosti a které mohou být považovány za součást dnes zcela zřejmého, přesto málo studovaného fenoménu ženské transnacionální mobility. V rámci mezinárodního kontextu současné proudy japonských migrantů otevírají řadu nových otázek. Tato disertační práce dokumentuje a analyzuje vztahy mezi sociokulturními přeměnami japonské společnosti od 90. let, následné změny hodnot a životního stylu mezi mladými Japonci, a jejich rozhodnutími vedoucími k migraci. Navzdory svým omezením tato disertační práce ukazuje na řadu významných poznatků ve studiu mezinárodní migrace, čímž přispívá k současnému poznání v dané oblasti. Na teoretické úrovni bylo cílem přispět k pochopení procesů sociální integrace japonských přistěhovalců v koncepcích transnacionalismu a lifestyle migrace, což může vést k novému vhledu na tuto problematiku nejen v rámci českého imigračního kontextu.

Abstract:

The dissertation focuses on the social integration of Japanese migrants living in the Czech Republic. The goal was to determine how the Japanese perceive their lives in the Czech Republic and to evaluate their social experiences. I performed qualitative research (semi-structured interviews) which was based on the four-dimensional model of social integration proposed by German sociologists Bosswick and Heckmann. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used for the analysis and interpretation of data. From the available statistics on the Japanese population within the Czech Republic, it is possible to observe significant gender imbalances, which are unique among nationalities that are living in the Czech Republic. This dissertation deals with the above-mentioned imbalances and puts them in a broader context with respect to social integration among different types of Japanese migrants. These migrants can be divided into three groups, which are fundamentally different from each other in their way of life and their degree of contact with the Czech majority. Of particular interest was that the young Japanese females who have departed from the usual track of marriage and life in Japan and who can be seen as part of a highly visible, yet little-studied phenomenon of women’s transnational mobility. Even outside of the Czech Republic, recent flows of Japanese migrants have opened up a range of new issues regarding international migration. This dissertation documents and analyzes connections between the socio-cultural transformations of Japanese society since the 1990s, the subsequent lifestyle value shifts among the young middle-class Japanese, and their decision to migrate. Despite its limitations, this dissertation has demonstrated a number of significant patterns in the study of international migration, thereby contributing to contemporary migration studies. On a theoretical level, the aim was to contribute to the understanding of social integration processes within the concepts of transnationalism and lifestyle migration in order to lead to new insights on the migration issue in the Czech Republic.
