Benefits of poetrytherapy in the context of psycho-social rehabilitation with clients with mental illness

Abstract:

This study focuses on how poetry therapy can contribute to psychosocial rehabilitation with people wi-th serious mental illnesses. The theoretical part includes definitions of main terms, relationship between poetry and mental health and areas that can be approached within the rehabilitation with the help of poetry therapy. The research part describes the experiences of participants of two programs where poetry therapy was used in community centre care setting. Using thematic analysis, meanings linked to improved mental state of participants and key components of recovery are identified. Seven themes are identified: change of emotional state, group support, challenging of the stereotype and isolation, self-realisation, improved ability to express one-self, ability to approach things from different angles and perspective and thus the ability to look for new solutions. Conclusion of the study discusses limitations of the study.

Abstract:

Táto štúdia je zameraná na prínos poetoterapie do oblasti psychosociálnej rehabilitácie zacielenej na skupinu ľudí s vážnym duševným ochorením. V teoretickej časti sú definované základné pojmy, vzťah poézie a duševného zdravia a oblasti, na ktoré možno v rámci rehabilitácie prostredníctvom poetoterapie pôsobiť. Výskumná časť sa zameriava na skúsenosť participantov dvoch poetoterapeutických programov v rámci centra komunitnej starostlivosti. Prostredníctvom tematickej analýzy sú v rámci tejto skúsenosti identifiko-vané významy viažuce sa k pozitívnemu ovplyvňovaniu respondentovho duševného zdravia a kľúčovým komponentom úzdravy. Bolo identifikovaných sedem tém a to zmena emočného nastavenia, podpora sku-piny, narušenie stereotypu a izolácie, sebarealizácia, zvýšená schopnosť expresie, prerámcovanie životných tém a nadobudnutie vhľadu a obohatenie života a hľadanie nových riešení. V závere sú diskutované limity štúdie.
