Environmental determinants of functional and life-history traits of North American birds

Abstract:

Předpokládá se, že vnější prostředí na zemi ovlivňuje evoluci životních strategií (life histories) organismů, tedy behaviorální, anatomické a fyziologické adaptace (life-history znaky) a zároveň s nimi související znaky morfologické. Důsledkem proměnlivosti prostředí je velká geografická variabilita v těchto znacích, například dobře známý latitudinální trend ve velikosti snůšky u ptáků nebo ve velikosti těla. Zmapování prostorové distribuce strategií pak poskytuje dobrou informaci o selekční tlacích na velkých prostorových škálách, identifikace klíčových faktorů však není triviální. Cílem této práce je zmapování geografických trendů vybraných life-history a morfologických znaků severoamerických ptáků na vybraném území a identifikace hlavních determinant prostředí souvisejících s life-history a morfologickými znaky ptáků na území kontinentálních Spojených států amerických. Modely testující vliv environmentálních faktorů na life-history a morfologické znaky severoamerických ptáků (pěvců a nepěvců) dokázaly vysvětlit poměrně velký podíl variability v datech (v rozmezí 36 86 %). Nejvýznamnějšími proměnnými prostředí, ovlivňující životní strategie severoamerických ptáků, jsou průměrná teplota, produktivita prostředí a nadmořská výška. Z prostého geografického zobrazení rozložení hodnot vybraných life-history znaků ptáků v rámci sledovaného území je zřejmé, že některé obecné trendy, jaké sledujeme v celosvětovém měřítku, lze najít i na menším území. Ačkoliv je tato práce z části o exploraci dostupných dat, shromážděné údaje a výsledky testů mohou poskytnout cenné vodítko pro další analýzy a srovnání s výsledky z jiných oblastí, například s Evropou.

Abstract:

The varying environment on the Earth is assumed to influence an evolution of organisms' life histories, which means behavioural, anatomical and physiological adaptations together with morphological traits related to them. As a result of changeability of environment there is a large geographical variability in these traits, for example well-known latitudinal trend in the clutch size or in body size. Mapping the spatial distribution of life-histories provides good information about selective pressures on large spatial scale, however the identification of the main determinants is not trivial. The aim of this study is mapping the geographical trends of chosen life-histories and morphological traits of North American birds in the selected area and identification of the main environmental determinants connected with the life-histories and morphological traits of birds on a geographic scale of the contiguous USA. Models testing the influence of environmental factors on life-histories and morphological traits of passerine and non-passerine birds explained relatively large proportion of variability in the data (in the range 36 - 86 %). The most significant variables of the environment influencing life-histories of North American birds were the mean temperature, environmental productivity and altitude. From the simple geographical distribution of selected life-histories and traits of birds within selected area it is obvious that some of the common trends monitored on a global scale can be found even in a smaller area. Although this study partly deals with an exploration of available data, collected data and test results can provide valuable clue for further analysis and comparison to the results from other area, such as Europe.
