Analysis of worldwide trade in live and non-living CITES specimens of Panthera tigris from 2004 to 2024

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca sa v zaoberá analýzou medzinárodného obchodu s ohrozeným druhom Panthera tigris na základe voľne dostupnej databázy CITES Trade Databaze v rokoch 2004 až 2024. Cieľom práce bolo porovnať import a export, identifikovať trendy v obchodných tokoch, určiť najčastejšie obchodné komodity a identifikovať najčastejší účel a zdroj obchodu. V teoretickej časti práca obsahuje získané informácie o biológií tigrov a ich poddruhov, geografické rozšírenie, o hrozbách, ktorým čelia, ochrane a dôvodoch obchodovania s jedincami tohto druhu a ich derivátmi. Analýza dát získaných z databázy CITES, ktorej úlohou je chrániť nespočetné množstvo druhov zvierat a rastlín pred vyhubením vo voľnej prírode pomocou regulácie medzinárodného obchodu, sa zamerala na import a export v rámci Českej republiky, ázijských krajín, členských štátov Európskej únie a ostatných krajín sveta. Z výsledkov vyplýva, že v rámci globálneho obchodu import tigrov v poslednej dobe zaznamenal pokles, zatiaľ čo počet exportovaných jedincov kolíše s miernym medziročným poklesom. V Ázii a EU dominuje export nad importom, zatiaľ čo vo svete prevláda import nad exportom. V Českej republike prevažuje export živých jedincov. Pomocou chí-kvadrát testu bola overená hypotéza o vzťahu medzi lokalitou a typom importu/ exportu. Najčastejším účelom obchodu sú cirkusy a putovné výstavy, pričom väčšina jedincov pochádza z kontrolovaných chovov, ktoré neohrozujú voľne žijúce populácie. Na záver boli identifikovaní najväčší importéri a exportéri v sledovaných obdobiach 2004-2014 a 2015-2024.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the analysis of international trade in the endangered species Panthera tigris based on the freely available CITES Trade Database from 2004 to 2024. The aim of the thesis was to compare import and export, identify trends in trade flows, determine the most common trade commodities and identify the most common purpose and source of trade. In the theoretical part, the thesis contains information obtained on the biology of tigers and their subspecies, their geographical distribution, the threats they face, the protection and reasons for trading in individuals of this species and their derivatives. The analysis of data obtained from the CITES database, whose task is to protect countless species of animals and plants from extinction in the wild by regulating international trade, focused on imports and exports within the Czech Republic, Asian countries, European Union member states and other countries of the world. The results show that within the global trade, imports of tigers have recently decreased, while the number of exported individuals fluctuates with a slight year-on-year decrease. In Asia and the EU, exports dominate over imports, while imports prevail over exports worldwide. In the Czech Republic, exports of live individuals predominate. The hypothesis of the relationship between location and type of import/export was tested using the chi-square test. The most common purpose of trade is circuses and traveling exhibitions, with most individuals coming from controlled breeding that does not threaten wild populations. Finally, the largest importers and exporters were identified in the monitored periods 2004-2014 and 2015-2024.
