"Deliberate practice" method and its application to clarinet playing

Abstract:

Diplomová práce si klade za cíl aplikovat metodu „deliberate practice“ neboli teorii záměrného získávání zkušeností na hru na klarinet. Práce popisuje aspekty, které přispívají k dosažení „deliberate practice“ s ohledem na osvojování hudebních kompetencí na odborné úrovni, a věnuje se tak výzkumu expertizy na hudebním poli. Práce zkoumá dichotomii osvojování schopností na základě buď dědičnosti, nebo praxe, a pokouší se tak zodpovědět na otázku, zda existuje dědičná predispozice pro dosažení vysoké úrovně. Práce poté popisuje způsob, jak metoda přispívá k dosažení odborné úrovně ve hře na klarinet. Práce propojuje „deliberate practice“ s hudebním vzděláváním a představuje četné implikace, které z jejího výzkumu vyplývají především na hudebním poli v České republice.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to apply the method of deliberate practice to clarinet playing and to find out its pitfalls and specifics. The thesis describes the aspects that contribute to “deliberate practice” with regard to the acquisition of competences at an expert level, and thus explores the research of expertise in the musical field. Mainly it focuses on the dichotomy of acquiring abilities based on either heredity or practice, and therefore attempts to answer whether there is a heritable predisposition to achieve high levels of competency. The thesis then describes how the method contributes to the achievement of proficiency in clarinet playing. The thesis connects “deliberate practice” with music education and presents numerous implications that arise from its research, especially in the musical field in the Czech Republic.
