Shelted housing for intelectually disabled persons: needs and expectations of parents

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na oblast potřeb a očekávání rodičů osob s mentálním postižením, využívajících služeb chráněného bydlení sv. Michaela v Brně. Mimo zmapování dané oblasti je cílem výzkumu také zjistit, jak na dané rodičovské potřeby a očekávání služba odpovídá a jak se sami rodiče v jejich naplňování angažují.Tohoto výzkumu se zúčastnilo 9 matek a 2 otci dětí s mentálním postižením, kteří byli vybráni pomocí záměrného výběru a skrze vzájemně předané kontakty. Pro účel nalezení odpovědí na zkoumané otázky byl v práci použit kvalitativní výzkumný design. Data získaná pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů byla zpracována použitím metody obsahové analýzy, inspirované některými prvky metody zakotvené teorie. Výsledky studie ukazují důležité potřeby a očekávání, které rodiče formulují v oblastech komunikace s chráněným bydlením, vztahů s personálem a v oblasti péče poskytované jejich potomkům. Z výsledků vyplývá, že služba v mnohém neodpovídá požadavkům rodičů, zejména pak v oblasti péče o potomky a v oblasti komunikace. Rodiče se v naplňování svých očekávání aktivně angažují, k čemuž využívají několik strategií. V diskuzi této studie jsou na základě zjištěných výsledků formulována některá doporučení pro službu chráněného bydlení.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with needs and expectations of parents of mentally disabled persons who use the services of st. Michael sheltered housing in Brno. The aim of the research is to map the given field, as well as to ascertain the service's response to the parents' needs and expectations, and also how the parents engage in meeting their needs and expectations. Nine mothers and two fathers of children with mental disabilities participated in the research, they were selected by the means of non-probability sampling and shared contacts. The qualitative research design was employed in order to find the answer to the research question. The data from semi-structured interviews were interpreted using content analysis method inspired by some grounded theory features. The outcomes of the research highlight significant needs and expectations which parents specify in the fields of their communication with the sheltered housing, relationships between them and the staff, and the care provided to their children. The outcomes reveal that the service is in many respects not adequate to the needs of the parents, especially in the fields of care and communication. The parents engage in meeting their expectations using several strategies. Based on the outcomes, the discussion formulates recommendations for the sheltered housing.
