Analysis of rider and horse falls and the incidence of injuries and fatalities in horse racing in the Czech Republic and worldwide

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo provést analýzu dostihového provozu v České republice, porovnat situaci se zahraničím a provést analýzu vlivu vybraných faktorů dle databáze Jockey Clubu České republiky na výskyt pádů jezdců, pádů koní, zranění a fatalit koní v dostihovém provozu v České republice a porovnat výsledky se zahraničím. V analýze dostihového provozu v období 2011-2023 v České republice byl zaznamenán klesající trend a nižší zastoupení oproti zahraničí u počtu dostihů, startů a startujících koní. Průměrný výskyt fatalit v České republice od roku 2011 do roku 2023 je 2,91 fatalit na 1000 startů. V překážkových dostizích je průměrný výskyt 7,54 fatalit na 1000 startů a v rovinových dostizích 0,94 fatalit na 1000 startů. Ve steeplechase je průměrný výskyt 8,45 fatalit na 1000 startů a u dostihů přes proutěné překážky 4,21 fatalit na 1000 startů. Ve statistické analýze četnosti fatálních zraněních dostihových koní v České republice v období 2013-2023, byly zjištěny statisticky průkazné nebo vysoce průkazné rozdíly v závislosti na faktorech (země původu dostihového koně, pohlaví koně, distance dostihu, kategorie dostihu) u různých typů fatálních zranění. Nejvyšší výskyt fatalit za dostihovou sezónu 2023 byl u dostihových koní zahraničního chovu (2,98 fatalit/1000 startů), na supervytrvaleckou distanci dostihu (5,35 fatalit/1000 startů) a v kategorii dostihu Listed (7,14 fatalit/1000 startů). Ve statistické analýze četnosti pádů koní a jezdců v dostizích v České republice v roce 2023 se faktor měsíc konání dostihu průkazně lišil u pádů koní, kdy nejvyšší výskyt pádů koní byl v měsíci říjnu (20 pádů koní/1000 startů). Vysoce průkazný rozdíl u pádů koní a jezdců byl u faktoru závodiště konaného dostihu, kdy nejvyšší výskyt byl na závodišti v Pardubicích u pádů koní (46 pádů koní/1000 startů) a jezdců (52,97 pádů jezdců/1000 startů). Vysoce průkazně se dále lišil faktor distance dostihu u pádů koní a jezdců, kdy byl nejvyšší výskyt na supervytrvaleckou distanci dostihu u pádů koní (39 pádů koní/1000 startů) a jezdců (50,27 pádů jezdců/1000 startů). Faktor typ dostihu byl průkazný u pádů koní a vysoce průkazný u pádů jezdců. Nejvyšší výskyt byl u typu dostihu ve steeplechase u pádů koní (52,44 pádů koní/1000 startů) a jezdců (71,07 pádů jezdců/1000 startů).

Abstract:

The aim of the study was to analyse the racing system in the Czech Republic, to compare the situation with abroad and to analyse the influence of selected factors according to the database Jockey Club of the Czech Republic on the incidence of rider falls, horse falls, injuries and fatalities of horses in racing system in the Czech Republic and to compare the results with abroad. In the analysis of the racing traffic in the period 2011-2023 in the Czech Republic, a decreasing trend and lower representation compared to abroad was noted for the number of races, starts and horses starting. The average fatality rate in the Czech Republic from 2011 to 2023 is 2.91 fatalities per 1000 starts. In steeplechase racing, the average incidence is 7.54 fatalities per 1000 starts and in flat racing 0.94 fatalities per 1000 starts. In steeplechase the average incidence is 8.45 fatalities per 1000 starts and in steeplechase 4.21 fatalities per 1000 starts. In a statistical analysis of the frequency of fatal injuries in racehorses in the Czech Republic in the period 2013-2023, statistically significant or highly significant differences were found depending on factors (country of origin of the racehorse, sex of the horse, distance of the race, class of the race) for different types of fatal injuries. The highest inci-dence of fatalities for the 2023 racing season was for foreign-bred racehorses (2.98 fatali-ties/1000 starts), for the super-long distance of the race (5.35 fatalities/1000 starts) and for the Listed race class (7.14 fatalities/1000 starts). In a statistical analysis of the frequency of horse and rider falls in horse racing in the Czech Republic in 2023, the factor of the month of the race was significantly different for horse falls, with the highest incidence of horse falls in October (20 horse falls/1000 starts). A highly significant difference for horse and rider falls was in the factor of the race racecourse, with the highest incidence at the Pardubice racecourse for horse falls (46 horse falls/1000 starts) and rider falls (52.97 rider falls/1000 starts). The factor of distance of the race was also highly significant for horse and rider falls, with the highest incidence for the super-long distance for horse falls (39 horse falls/1000 starts) and rider falls (50.27 rider falls/1000 starts). The factor of type of race was significant for horse falls and highly significant for rider falls. The highest prevalence was for the type of steeplechase race for horse falls (52.44 horse falls/1000 starts) and rider falls (71.07 rider falls/1000starts).
