Birth order and its relation to body image and self-esteem in young adults

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zjišťuje souvislost mezi pořadím narození, body image a sebehodnocením u mladých dospělých a u zkoumaných proměnných předpokládá rozdíly mezi kategoriemi pořadí narození a pohlavími. Data byla sbírána pomocí on-line dotazníkového šetření. Pořadí narození bylo zjišťováno vlastními otázkami ohledně pořadí narození respondenta, body image bylo měřeno pomocí pěti subškál dotazníku Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire: Appearance Scales a sebehodnocení pomocí Rosenbergovy škály sebehodnocení. Finální výzkumný soubor činil 179 respondentů. Výsledky ukázaly, že pořadí narození u výzkumného souboru nemá signifikantní vliv na body image a sebehodnocení. Mezi jednotlivými kategoriemi pořadí narození nebyly nalezeny žádné statisticky významné rozdíly. Muži a ženy se statisticky významně nelišili v subškálách body image, ale lišili se v míře sebehodnocení. Muži vykazovali obecně vyšší míru sebehodnocení než ženy. Míra sebehodnocení pozitivně koreluje s hodnocením vzhledu a spokojeností s různými částmi těla, negativně s orientací na vzhled a starostlivostí ohledně nadváhy. Vztah mezi sebehodnocením a sebeposouzením vlastní váhy nevyšel statisticky významný.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis investigates the relationship between birth order, body image, and self-esteem in young adults. It also further hypothesizes differences between birth order and gender categories for the variables examined. The data was collected through an online questionnaire survey. The birth order data was collected by self administered questions about the respondent's birth order, the body image was measured using the five subscales of the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire: Appearance Scales, and the self-esteem with the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale. The final research sample consisted of 179 respondents. The results indicated that the birth order of the research population does not have a significant effect on body image and self-esteem. No statistically significant differences were found between the birth order categories. Men and women did not differ statistically significantly in the body image subscales, but they did differ in the levels of self-esteem. Men generally showed higher levels of self-esteem than women. The level of self-esteem positively correlates with Appearance Evaluation and Body Areas Satisfaction Scale, and negatively with Appearance Orientation and Overweight Preoccupation. The correlation between self-esteem and Self-Classified Weight did not turn out to be statistically significant.
