Historical and Political Aspects of the Formation of the Roman Empire

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje historicko-politickým aspektům formování římského impéria. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou část, kde je objasněn pojem impérium, který je pak uveden v praxi; a na praktickou část, kde je vysvětlen vývoj a formování římské říše. Teoretická část se věnuje konceptům impéria od autorů Motyla, Doylea a Galtunga a snaží se uchopit základní atributy impéria jako analytický nástroj a vysvětlit, jak může být koncept říše využit v sociálním vědeckém bádání. Analytická část je rozdělena na dvě časová období: období pozdní republiky a období císařství. Práce se soustředí na přelom republiky v císařství, neboť tato doba je klíčová pro budoucí římskou imperiální expanzi. Obě období obsahují několik podkapitol, které se zabývají jednotlivými aspekty, které formovaly vývoj říše. Nejdůležitějšími odvětvími je vojenství, hospodářství a ekonomika, politika a kultura. V části zabývající se republikou jsou uvedeny změny a vývoj ve všech těchto odvětvích, které vedly k přeměně státního zřízení. Zmíněné aspekty spolu souvisely a tvořily vhodné podmínky pro další vývoj. V části císařství je představena nastolená situace a jsou zde opět jednotlivá odvětví, v nichž se projevil vývoj. Zároveň jsou zde uvedeny inovace, které vedly k rozmachu říše a také jejího upevnění a přetrvání po další staletí. Na závěr císařství je ve zkratce uveden pozdější osud mocné říše.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the historical and political aspects of the formation of the Roman Empire. The paper is divided into a theoretical part where the concept of empire is clarified and later demonstrated in practice; and into a practical part, in which the development and formation of the Roman Em-pire are explained. The theoretical part deals with the concepts of empire through the works of Motyl, Doyle and Galtung attempting to grasp the basic attributes of empire as an analytical tool and to explore how the concept of empire may be utilized in social scientific inquiry. The analytical part is divided chronologically into two periods: the period of the Late Republic and the period of the Empire. The paper focuses on the transformation of the Republic into the Empire viewing this period as a crucial time for the forthcoming Roman imperial expansion. Both of these chapters contain several subsections dealing with various aspects that shaped the Empire?s development, the most important ones being military, economy, politics and culture. The section dealing with the Republic describes the changes and devel-opments in all of these branches that contributed to the change of the regime. These aspects are related to each other and create favorable conditions for further developments. The part discussing the Empire introduces the established situation as well as several branches that marked the Empire?s development. Simultaneously, a number of innovations that led to the expansion of the Empire is referred to, as well as the Empire?s consolidation and continuation throughout the following centuries. At the end of this chapter, the subsequent fate of the empire is mentioned in a nutshell.
