Maternity care for lesbian women: Approaches and attitudes of midwives

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem porodní péče o lesbičky a průzkumem postojů a přístupů porodních asistentek k této minoritě. Obsah teoretické části se zabývá základními pojmy homosexuality, problematikou "coming out" před zdravotnickým personálem a čím by mohl být proces odhalení se před zdravotnickým personálem ovlivňován, postoji a předsudky společnosti vůči homosexualitě, které ovlivňují ošetřovatelskou péči. Práce se také zabývá homofobií v české společnosti a diskriminací, se kterou souvisejí i stigmata pro lesbické matky ve zdravotnickém zařízení. Práce také seznamuje s péčí o lesby během celého těhotenství a porodu a rolí porodní asistentky, která má lesbický pár na starosti. V průzkumné části bylo pomocí polostrukturovaného dotazníku zjišťováno, jaké zaujímají porodní asistentky postoje, názory na lesby. Například zda zjištění, že je klientka lesba, změní jejich přístup k nim, nebo čím se péče o lesbičky liší od péče o heterosexuální klientku.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the topic of midwives' care for lesbians and a survey of approaches and attitudes of midwives towards this minority. The content of the theoretical part deals with the basic concepts of homosexuality, the issue of coming out in front of healthcare professionals and how the process of revelation in front of healthcare professionals can be affected. Society's attitudes and prejudices towards homosexuality that affect nursing care. The thesis also discusses homophobia in Czech society and discrimination, which is also related to stigmas for lesbian mothers from medical facilities. The thesis focuses on the care of lesbians during pregnancy and childbirth and the image of a midwife in charge of a lesbian couple. In the exploratory part, a semi-structured questionnaire was used to map out midwives' attitudes and approaches to lesbians in their care in Czechia. For example, whether finding out that a client is a lesbian will change the midwives approach towards them, or how caring for a lesbian is different from caring for a heterosexual client.
