Study of fast light changes of interacting binaries

Abstract:

My dissertation thesis presents CCD photometry of variable stars. Mass transfer between components and presence of accretion disk and circumstellar matter are typical features in interacting binaries. They were suggested to be responsible for fast irregular shorttime- scale light variations with low amplitudes, so-called flickering. There are just few observational studies of the phenomenon. I obtained large observational data for symbiotic stars: Z And, CH Cyg and T Crb and for some other variables. Statistical methods for flickering study are introduced on QR And data. During last two outbursts of Z And I detected rapid light variations. On the other hand, during CH Cyg brightening light curves showed no such variations. Data scatter in observations of other variables was on the same level as expected amplitude of flickering, but the data contained much more information and I used them for other phenomena studies and for long-term light curves. Features of instruments have to be known for the low amplitude light variation studies. I made the analysis of geometric structure of chips, statistical features, temperature and time dependences of bias, dark current and readout noise of SBIG ST-8XME and ST-8XE CCD cameras, which I used for variable star observations. Results, developed scripts and basic explanation of CCD photometry are introduced and they are available in electronic parts of the thesis on adress http://physics.muni.cz/~chm/dizina.html. I obtained total number of 116 light curves during 277 nights. I discovered 4 new variables and I confirmed variability of one star. I analysed observations of central object of planetary nebula Sh2-71. Ephemeris and physical parameters of some binaries were determined. Storage area for CCD frames is required, if we are processing the data. There was no archive to store original frames in the Czech Republic, thus I established MUNI FITS Photometric Archive. Frames could be online stored in single data format. Data could be easily found and processed, basic scripts have to be developed as well. Structure of FITS format was introduced, mainly definition of header and set of fixed keywords. Binary star observations were used to solve four astrophysical tasks: light curve phasing and ephemeris finding, mid-eclipse time determination and O-C diagram calculation, solution of apsidal motion and light time effect. Regression analysis allows to fit data with model function and it could to find optimal values of free parameters. Genetic algorithms allow to search for initial solution at global minimum of regression model. Both methods represent new approach to observational data analysis, however, I have to develope scripts for calculations. I was succeeded with using O-C diagram regression analysis on CO Lac and MZ Lac, variables showing apsidal motion. By solving Kepler equation regression solution was found for third body of AR Aur. Orbital elements were calculated as well. New approach was compared to traditional methods, taking as an example the mid-eclipse time determination by Kwee-Van Woerden method.

Abstract:

V dizertacnej práci sa venujem CCD fotometrii premenných hviezd. Interagujúce sústavy sú charakteristické prenosom hmoty a prítomnostou akrécneho disku a okolohviezdnej obálky. Fotometricky sa tieto štruktúry môžu prejavovat nepravidelnými rýchlymi variáciami jasnosti s malými aplitúdami, tzv. flickeringom. Observacne je jav málo preskúmaný. Získal som rozsiahly vlastný pozorovací materiál pre symbiotické sústavy Z And, CH Cyg, T CrB a pre niekolko dalších premenných hviezd. Na analýze pozorovaní QR And som ukázal štatistické metódy použitelné pri štúdiu flickeringu. Rýchle variácie som zaznamenal pocas dvoch posledných vzplanutí Z And, naproti tomu pri zjasnení CH Cyg som ich nepozoroval. Rozptyl získaných dát ostatných skúmaných sústav je na úrovni ocakávaných amplitúd flickeringu, avšak dáta obsahujú viac informácií a poslúžili pri štúdiu dalších javov a do dlhodobých svetelných kriviek. Pri skúmaní malých amplitúd musíme poznat vlastnosti prístrojov a preto som analyzoval geometrickú štruktúru cipov, casové a teplotné závislosti biasu, temného prúdu, vycítavacieho šumu a gainu CCD kamier SBIG ST-8XME a ST-8XE, s ktorými som pozoroval. Výsledky, vlastné výpoctové skripty a ucelený výklad základov CCD fotometrie predkladám v elektronických castiach práce na adrese http://physics.muni.cz/~chm/dizina.html. Celkovo som získal svetelné krivky pre 116 premenných hviezd pocas 277 nocí. Objavil som 4 nové premenné hviezdy a premennost jednej hviezdy som potvrdil. Analyzoval som pozorovania centrálneho objektu planetárnej hmloviny Sh2-71 a urcil som efemeridy a fyzikálne parametre niekolkých zákrytových sústav. Spracovanie observacných dát vyžaduje archiváciu snímok. V CR dosial chýbal archív originálnych CCD pozorovaní a preto som založil MUNI FITS Photometric Archive, ktorý bude slúžit na online zálohovanie snímok v jednotnom formáte, umožní lahké vyhladávanie a poskytne možnosti spracovania dát. Pripravil som základný balík skriptov, definoval som pevnú štruktúru formátu FITS, syntax jeho hlavicky a sadu klúcových slov s jednoznacným významom. Pozorovania zákrytových sústav som využil na riešenie štyroch astrofyzikálnych úloh: fázovanie svetelných kriviek so spresnovaním efemeríd, urcovanie okamihov miním a konštrukciu O-C diagramov, riešenie apsidálneho pohybu a efektu tretieho telesa. Metóda regresnej analýzy umožnuje preložit dátami modelovú funkciu a nájst optimálne hodnoty jej volných parametrov. Genetické algoritmy umožnujú vyhladat pociatocné riešenie v oblasti globálneho minima regresného modelu. Obe metódy predstavujú nový prístup k analýze pozorovacích dát, na výpocty som však musel vytvorit vlastné skripty. Regresnú analýzu O-C diagramov som úspešne použil pre sústavy s apsidálnym pohybom CO Lac a MZ Lac. Riešením Keplerovej rovnice som regresne urcil elementy tretieho telesa AR Aur. Rozdiel v použití nového prístupu a tradicných metód som ukázal na príklade urcovania okamihov miním metódou Kwee-Van Woerden.
