Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na měnící se způsob prezentace války v médiích od počátku televizního vysílání během Vietnamské války. Hlavním cílem diplomové práce je zhodnotit roli Amerických médií v dnešním válečném zpravodajství a také objasnit, za jakých okolností se vyvíjely vztahy mezi médii a Americkou vládou a armádou. Role médií je hodnocena na základě předpokladu, že fungují jako tzv. hlídací pes, jehož povinností je kriticky zkoumat rozhodnutí a činnost předních vládních představitelů. Charakter vývoje vztahů mezi médii a vládou může napomoci objasnit skutečnost, že Americká média nebyla schopna vykonávat tuto funkci během poslední válečné intervence Spojených států v Iráku v roce 2003. Diplomová práce je proto rozdělena do kapitol podle jednotlivých válečných konfliktů s účastí Spojených států, významných pro vývoj vztahů s médii: válka ve Vietnamu, invaze Grenady a Panamy, válka v Perském zálivu a válka v Iráku. Vietnamská válka zde představuje výchozí bod analýzy, jelikož byla první tzv. televizní válkou a co je více důležité, první válkou bez cenzury. Charakter válečného zpravodajství z Vietnamu položil základ pro budoucí vývoj vztahů mezi vládou, armádou a médii. Role médií je hodnocena na základě politického pozadí jednotlivých válek a také na základě způsobu integrace médií do Americké armády. Důraz je kladen na měnící se formu prezentace války prostřednictvím televize, což zahrnuje vizuální stránku a také celkovou podobu válečného zpravodajství. Faktory ovlivňující způsob prezentace války mohou napomoci pochopit jak a proč se změnila role médií ve válce a také jakou roli vlastně média přijala.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on the changing image of war the media has been presenting to the public since the beginning of television war coverage during the Vietnam War. The main aim of the thesis is to evaluate the role of American media in war reporting nowadays and to explain under what circumstances media-military as well as media-government relations have developed into the system we know today. The role of the media is evaluated on the basis of the presupposition that the media functions as a “watchdog” or the “Forth Estate”, a social power with an obligation to scrutinize governmental decisions and actions. The development of media-government relations helps to clarify the fact that American media failed in its watchdog role during the last major military intervention of the United States, the Iraq War. Therefore, the thesis is divided into chapters according to war conflicts in which the United States was involved, crucial for the development of media-military relations: the Vietnam War, Grenada and Panama invasions, the Gulf War, and the Iraq War. The Vietnam War represents a starting point for the analysis as it was the “first television war” and, more importantly, the first war without censorship. This war laid the basis for future development of media relations. The role of the media is scrutinized on the basis of political background and the form of integration of the media into the military during these conflicts. An emphasis is placed on the changing image of war presented on the television screen, including visual presentation as well as an overall form of war coverage. Factors influencing the image of war can help us understand how and why the role of the media changed and what role in war reporting the media actually accepted.
