Seasonal air temperature variability in the Czech Republic during the last 300 years based on instrumental, documentary and natural proxy data

Abstract:

Dizertační práce se zabývá zhodnocením sezónní variability teploty vzduchu v České republice v období 1701–2012. Ke zpracování byly využity dostupné časové řady z různých zdrojů. První zdroj představovala přístrojová měření meteorologických stanic Prahy-Klementina a Brna. Jejich měření byla analyzována zvlášť, ale spolu s dalšími meteorologickými stanicemi se podílela na přístrojové řadě České republiky, která byla v práci rovněž zahrnuta. Druhým zdrojem byly teplotní rekonstrukce z dokumentárních zdrojů, které prostorově pokrývaly zájmové území, případně i část území jiných středoevropských zemí. Poslední typ údajů reprezentovala teplotní rekonstrukce založená na přírodních proxy datech pocházejících z analýzy letokruhů horských lesních porostů. Jednotlivé sezóny se vymezily dle standardně definovaných ročních období s výjimkou jara, které odpovídalo období měsíců března–června. V celkovém součtu se pracovalo se sedmi teplotními řadami. Před analytickým zpracováním byly všechny teplotní řady převedeny na řady odchylek vůči normálovému období 1961–1990 a v případě potřeby zkráceny na období 1701–2012. K interpretaci teplotní variability v širších souvislostech byly dále zpracovány soubory přístrojových, rekonstruovaných i simulovaných hodnot přízemního tlaku vzduchu a cirkulačních indexů. Součástí práce je výčet hlavních výzkumných směrů studia minulého klimatu, které se uplatňují ve středoevropském regionu. Tento přehled je doplněný o časový vývoj jednotlivých směrů s důrazem na aktuální řešená témata. K řešení dílčích úkolů byly zvoleny adekvátní metodické postupy a nástroje statistického zpracování dat. Ty zahrnovaly jednak metody popisné statistiky (kvantifikace charakteristik polohy a variability) sloužící např. k vymezení souborů teplých či chladných sezón, ale i další metody a postupy k odhadnutí časových trendů nebo míry cykličnosti časových řad. Samostatnou skupinu představovaly vícerozměrné statistické metody (analýza empirických ortogonálních funkcí, kanonická korelační analýza), aplikované za účelem kvantifikace vlivu atmosférické cirkulace na teplotní poměry ve střední Evropě. Z porovnání jednotlivých řad vyplývá, že se přístrojové i dokumentární údaje shodují v časovém výskytu teplých/chladných období a konkrétních extrémních sezón. Vyšší koncentrace chladných sezón nastala v průběhu 18. a zejména 19. století. Prakticky všechny řady přesvědčivě sdílejí kladný trend teploty vzduchu spojený s antropogenním globálním oteplováním. Rekonstrukce založená na analýze letokruhů se obecně liší v míře citlivosti vůči nízko-/vysokofrekvenčnímu signálu a v limitech souvisejících s vnějšími vlivy, jako je např. znečištění životního prostředí. Navzdory prostorové vzdálenosti a odlišným zdrojům dat bylo doloženo, že i rozdílné teplotní rekonstrukce sdílí nezanedbatelné množství společné variability. Atmosférická cirkulace se do teplotní variability ve střední Evropě promítá především prostřednictvím zonálních cirkulačních typů s vysokými gradienty tlaku vzduchu. Nejvýraznější vliv nastává v průběhu zimy, v létě je naopak vliv cirkulace velmi slabý. Cirkulační indexy sestavené z geograficky bližších regionů jsou vhodnějším nástrojem pro analýzu variability středoevropských teplot vzduchu. Za účelem vyhodnocení faktorů souvisejících s geografickou vzdáleností a typem použitých teplotních rekonstrukcí byly v rámci diskuze částečně zpracovány další časové řady z lokalit západní a střední Evropy. Dále je diskutována schopnost jednotlivých řad reprezentovat anomálie související s přirozenými klimatotvornými faktory

(sluneční, případně vulkanická aktivita). Dizertační práce tak rozšiřuje stávající poznatky věnující se variabilitě teploty vzduchu v České republice a jejím blízkém okolí.

Abstract:

Dissertation thesis deals with the evaluation of seasonal air temperature variability in the Czech Republic during the 1701–2012 period. Accessible time series from different sources were utilized for data processing. Instrumental records from the Prague-Klementinum and the Brno meteorological stations served as the first source. Their records were analysed separately, but they were concerned in instrumental series of the Czech Republic, which were also included in the thesis, together with records from other meteorological stations. Temperature reconstructions from documentary records spatially covering the area of interest, respectively part of the area of other Central European countries, were the second source. Air temperature reconstruction based on natural proxy data originating from mountain forest’s tree-ring analyses represented the last category of the data. Individual seasons were defined according to standard seasons with the exception of the spring season that corresponded with the March–June period. There were elaborated seven temperature series in total. Every temperature series had been transformed into the differences related to the normalized period of 1961–2012 and eventually shortened to the period of 1701–2012 before the analysis were processed. Consequently, instrumental, reconstructed and simulated values of the sea-level pressure fields and circulation indices were treated in order to express air temperature variability in broader context. The list of the main research branches of past climate variability being solved in the region of Central Europe is the part of the thesis. This overview is accompanied with time evolution of the individual branches with the emphasis on currently processed issues. Adequate methodical approaches and statistical tools were chosen for treating particular tasks. It covered not only descriptive statistic methods (quantification of the characteristics of location and dispersion) serving e.g. for the determination of warm and cold seasons but also other methods and procedures used for trend estimates or the rate of the time series’ cyclicity. Multiscale statistical methods (empirical orthogonal function analysis, canonical correlation analysis) applied in order to quantify the influence of atmospheric circulation onto air temperature conditions in Central Europe comprised separated group of methods. Instrumental series and documentary reconstructions agree well on the occurrence of warm/cold periods and specific extreme seasons. There is a higher concentration of cold periods during the 18th and especially 19th centuries. Almost all the series convincingly share the positive air temperature trend associated with the anthropogenic global warming. The tree-ring reconstruction generally differs in the sensitivity towards the low-/high-frequency signal and in the limits connected to external factors, such as environmental pollution. Despite spatial distance and different data sources it has been proved that an affinitive temperature series share a vast extent of mutual variability. Atmospheric circulation influences Central European temperature variability mainly through the zonal circulation patterns with high air pressure gradients. The most pronounced influence occurs during winter, conversely very week circulation influence take place in summer. Circulation indices compiled from geographically closest regions are more appropriate for Central European air temperature variability analysis than those from distant regions.
