Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Route 66 in American culture“ se zabývá vyobrazením americké dálnice s označením Route 66 ve zvolené americké literatuře, se zvláštním ohledem na mobilitu ztvárněných postav. Jako hlavní literatura pro vlastní analýzu slouží knihy Hrozny hněvu od Johna Steinbecka, Na cestě od Jacka Kerouaca, román Vladimira Nabokova Lolita a Zen a umění údržby motocyklu od Roberta Pirsiga. Hlavním cílem práce je zjistit, jakou roli sehrála zvolená literatura v procesu popularizace Route 66 a jak se liší přístup autorů k tématu mobility. Teoretická část této práce pojednává o historii dopravy v USA s ohledem na vývoj silničního systému, roli mobility v životech obyvatelstva USA a historii samotné Route 66. Praktická část této práce pak analyzuje zvolenou literaturu za účelem dosažení zvolených cílů.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis “Route 66 in American Culture” focuses on the depiction of Route 66 in the selected American literature, with a special regard to mobility of portrayed characters. The primary sources for the analysis are novels The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, On the Road by Jack Kerouac, Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig. The aim of this thesis is to explore the role of the selected literature in the process of popularisation of Route 66 and to compare different approaches to mobility. The theoretical part of this thesis provides information about the history of transportation in the USA with a regard to the history of the U.S. road system, the role of mobility in lives of Americans and the history of Route 66 itself. The practical part of the thesis analyses the selected literature in order to achieve the chosen goals.
