The Return of the Living Dead: Intertextual Parody as the Concept for Creating Cult Film

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje analytickému rozboru filmu Návrat oživlých mrtvol (či Návrat živé smrti, český distribuční název nabízí dvě varianty) – popsáním jeho kulturně-historického a ekonomického kontextu, hlavní část práce je však určena neoformalistické analýze filmu. Kapitola zaměřená na kulturně-ekonomický kontext se snaží v prvé řadě zmapovat kulturní situaci, za které film vznikal, jaké souvislosti ovlivnily jeho produkci a distribuci či jaká byla odborná i divácké recepce snímku v době jeho uvedení do kin. Skrze tyto faktory se snažím naznačit některé prvky, které ovlivnily konzumpci filmu a mohly zapříčinit první předpoklady pro zkultovění díla. Neoformalistická analýza se zaměřuje na vystihnutí veškerých narativních či stylistických prvků snímku, které nejvíce přispívaly k formování dominanty filmu. Tyto dominantní faktory jsem definovala jako intertextuální parodii – jsou to právě prvky intertextuality, ze kterých vzniká parodický koncept.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with a detailed analysis of Dan O’Bannon’s movie Return of the Living Dead, which was released in 1985. First section of my work is focused on a cultural and economical historical context. It means, that I described all circumstances of production, distribution and reception. Through these factors, I tried to suggest some elements that influenced a political economy of the film. The major part of the thesis concentrates on the neoformalist analysis of the film. The neoformalism is an analytical approach in the film theory developed by Kristin Thompson and David Bordwell. The neoformalist analysis is focused on all narrative and stylistic elements of Return of the Living Dead, which contributed to a creation of the film dominant. I defined these dominant factors as intertextual parody - they are the elements of intertextuality, which created the concept of parody.
