The Artist Identity as a Privilege and a Duty

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá identitou moderního umělce na základě biografií, rozhovorů, ale i kritických esejí. Všímáme si přitom, z jakých sociálních vrstev pocházejí jedinci, kteří se stávají uměleckými ikonami, dále procesů přidělování, respektive přijímání statusu a identity umělce a čím je tato umělcova poloha v sociálním prostoru specifická. Především nás zajímá, jaké nekonvenční chování identita umělce legitimizuje a k dodržování jakých výjimečných konvencí naopak zavazuje. Zjistili jsme, že moderní umělci pocházejí často ze skupin, jež jsou ve vztahu ke společenským konvencím a pravidlům problémové. Budoucí umělci žijí mnohdy jako sociální marginálové, svým okolím bývají hodnocení jako neúspěšní a není výjimkou, že jsou za svou nonkonformitu sankcionováni. Přerod v umělce se děje například, je-li dotyčný úspěšný v dobově podmíněných institucích: V první polovině dvacátého století na pódiu prestižního uměleckého podniku, později v rádiu a na přelomu tisíciletí v televizi. Jakmile se do té doby nepřizpůsobivý potížista stane uznávaným umělcem, nejen že se posune ze spodních do vrchních příček sociální stratifikace, navíc je nově interpretována i jeho konfliktní minulost – jako průprava k velkému umění. Rovněž je od této chvíle umělci dovolováno leccos, co ostatní sociální aktéři nesmějí, ba co víc: Jeho publikum od umělce očekává, že bude balancovat na hraně toho, co je, a co už není dovoleno. I pro uměleckou ikonu existují jisté hranice, za něž už nesmí, stejnětak ovšem její okolí nelibě nese, může to vnímat jako trestuhodné, když se hvězda chce své identity umělce vzdát a chovat se konvenčně jako „normální“ člověk.

Abstract:

This paper deals with the artist identity based on of biographies, interviews or critical essays. We observe, from which social levels the individuals, that are becoming art icons came from, the process of giving, respectively receiving of the artistic status and identity and what are the specifics of the artist´s location in the social space. Above all we are interested in which behaviour is legitimated by the artist identity and which special conventions the artist has to conform. We have found out, that modern artists are often came from the groups, that are troubled in the relation to the social conventions and rules. The future artists frequently live as social marginals, they are seen as unsuccessful and it is not an exception, when they are getting sanctions for their non-conformity. The rebirth in the artist happens for example, when the mentioned person is successful in contemporarily conditioned institutions: In the first half of twentieth century on stage of prestigious artistic house, later in radio and on the break of the millenniums in television. As soon as the inadaptable bad man becomes respected artist, he moves up from the bottom to the top levels in the social stratification and his conflicting pastness is newly interpreted – as a school of big art. From this moment the artist can also do some things, which are for the others prohibited and even more. In addition: His audience – following expects, that the artist will balance on the edge between what is, and what is not allowed. There are some borders for the artist icons that can´t be crossed as well. But its social environment resent (artist´s fans can feel it as something culpable), when the „star“ wants to give the identity of artist and live conventionally as „normal“ one.
