The Arab Spring and the End of History by Francis Fukuyama

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá tématem teorie konce dějin amerického sociálního vědce Francise Fukuyamy a fenoménem arabského jara. Fukuyamova teze o vítězství ideje liberální demokracie je zkoumána v empirickém kontextu nedávných revolucí arabského jara. Cílem je zodpovědět výzkumnou otázku, zdali lze "arabské jaro" interpretovat jako historickou událost neodporující Fukuyamově konceptu konce dějin? Fukuyamova teorie je v první části práce rozložena na pět základních tvrzení: liberálně-demokratický způsob vlády, lidská práva, občanskou společnost, tržní ekonomiku, modernizaci a sekularizaci. Ve výzkumné části jsou tato tvrzení konfrontována s revolučním děním v Tunisku, Egyptě, Libyi a Sýrii. Předpokládán je výskyt těchto základních tvrzení na ideové bázi, tedy ve vyjádřeních a krocích revolučních režimů či skupin usilujících o vládu v dané zemi. V závěru práce jsou shrnuty výsledky testování. Je konstatována falzifikace Fukuyamovy teorie tímto pravděpodobně nejtvrdším možným empirickým testem.

Abstract:

The “end of history” theory by the American social scientist Francis Fukuyama and the phenomenon of the Arab Spring are the two leading topics of this thesis. Fukuyama’s argument about the victory of the liberal democracy’s idea is examined in the context of the recent Arab spring revolutions. The objective of this thesis is to answer the research question: „Is the ‘Arab spring’ interpretable as a historical event not contradicting the Fukuyama’s ‘end of history’ concept?“ In the first part of the thesis, Fukuyama’s theory is analyzed and laid out for five basic statements: liberal-democratic way of governance, human rights, civil society, market economy, modernization and secularization. In the following research are these statements confronted by the revolutionary events in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Syria. The presence of these statements on ideal basis is expected in the pronouncements and in the acts of revolutionary regimes or of the groups aspiring to the reign in the respective countries. The comparison is summarized in the final part of the thesis. Falsification of Fukuyama’s theory by probably the hardest possible empirical test is claimed.
