Conceptualization and typologization of non-state armed actors: The Case of the Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na Lidové mobilizační jednotky, které jsou největším nestátním ozbrojeným aktérem v Iráku a na rozdíly mezi jednotlivými uskupeními působící v rámci jednotek. V teoretické části práce je vysvětlen pojem nestátní ozbrojený aktér a jeho typologizace se zaměřením na milice a paramilitární síly. Na základě rešerše dostupných zdrojů jsou dále popsané samotné Lidové mobilizační jednotky z hlediska vzniku, procesu integrace a legálním postavením, struktury a zajištění jaké znaky nestátního ozbrojeného aktéra naplňují. V rámci výzkumné části je 14 vybraných uskupení analyzováno podle stanovených kritérií a následně podle nich i odlišeno. Cílem práce je tedy zodpovězení stanovených výzkumných otázek, jaký typ nestátního ozbrojeného aktéra jsou Lidové mobilizační jednotky a jak se od sebe jednotlivé skupiny v rámci Lidových mobilizačních jednotek liší.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on the Popular Mobilization Forces, which are the largest non-state armed actor in Iraq and on the differences between individual groups within the units. In the theoretical part of the work, the concept of a non-state armed actor and its typology is explained with focus on militias and paramilitary forces. Based on search of available sources the Popular Mobilization Forces themselves are further described in term of their origin, integration process, legal status, structure, and finding out what characteristic of non-state armed actors the units fulfill. As part of the research part 14 selected groups are analyzed accroding to established criteria and subsequently differentiated accroding to them. The aim of the thesis is to answer the set research questions, what type of non-state armed actor the Popular Mobilization Forces are and how individual groups within the Popular Mobilization Forces differ from each other.
