Theory of African Military Regimes (Case Study Ethiopia)

Abstract:

Politické systémy afrických zemí zůstávají v tuzemsku poněkud stranou odborného zájmu. Práce se snaží tuto mezeru zčásti překlenout, když se věnuje Etiopii. Tato práce je případovou studií, která analyzuje jeden konkrétní režim - etiopský vojenský režim Mengistu Haile Mariama. Zabývá se obdobím od roku 1972, kdy se Mengistu Haile Mariam chopil moci a sesadil císaře Haile Sellasie, až do pádu režimu v roce 1991. Cílem této práce je analyzovat a klasifikovat marxistický etiopský vojenský režim, podporovaný Sovětským svazem. Tato práce je zasazena do teoretického rámce typologie autoritativních vojenských režimů podle významného politologa E. A. Nordlingera. Jedná se o klasifikaci vojenských režimů podle politických a ekonomických cílů armády a rozsahu podílu armády na samotné vládě v daném politické režimu. V této práci bude použita především metoda historicko-komparativní, komparativní, deduktivní a induktivní metoda, analýza a metoda analogie.

Abstract:

The political systems of African countries remain somewhat outside of the experts interest. This thesis tries to partly overcome this gap through it's focus on Ethiopia. This thesis is a case study analyzing one specific regime - the military regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam of Ethiopia. It spans through Mengist Haile Mariam's installation into power following his deposition of emperor Haile Sellasie in 1972 till the fall of the regime in 1991. The goal of this thesis is to analyze and classify Marxist military regime of Ethiopia supported by the Soviet Union. This thesis is immersed in the theoretical background of the types of authoritative military regimes according to a renowned political scientist, E. A. Nordlinger. It covers classification of military regimes according to political and economical goals of the army and the depth of the army's role in the government of the given political regime. The thesis mostly uses the historic-comparative, comparative, deductive and inductive methods, analysis and analogical method.
