Gender identity in Angela Carter's The Magic Toyshop novel

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to analyse Melanie's development of her gender identity and gender role in The Magic Toyshop novel. It primarily focuses on five key moments of Melanie's life that shaped her gender identity and how she determined her identity by the end of the novel. It also focuses on the submission of her gender role to Uncle Philip. The thesis also analyses the background of the author, Angela Carter, and her period of time, the second wave of feminism. The thesis connects Carter to magic realism and Gothic literature and demonstrates the use of its elements in Carter's works, but mostly in The Magic Toyshop.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat vývoj genderové identity a genderové role Melanie v novele Magické hračkářství. Práce se zejména soustředí na pět klíčových momentů v životě Melanie, které formovaly její genderovou identitu a jakým způsobem svoji identitu určila na konci novely. Práce se také soustředí na podrobení její genderové role pod strýce Philipa. Nadále také práce analyzuje pozadí autorky Angely Carterové a její časovou periodu, druhou vlnu feminismu. Také Carterovou spojuje s magickým realismem a gotickou literaturou a ukazuje použití jejich elementů v autorčiných pracích, avšak zejména v Magickém hračkářství.
