Prison subcultures

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce v první řadě představuje určitý přehled sociologických prací věnovaných vězeňským subkulturám. Cílem této práce je tedy poskytnout vhled do problematiky studia (mužských) vězeňských populací a to jak z diachronní, tak synchronní perspektivy. V první části práce je věnována pozornost teoriím sociální deviace a kriminality, neboť tyto tvoří bázi pro další úvahy o povaze subkultur a instituce vězení. Diskutovány jsou etablované teorie Chicagské školy, teorie deviantních subkultur, teorie sociální kontroly a radikální kriminologie. Stěžejní část práce tvoří pojednání o třech teoretických modelech vězeňských subkultur. Deprivační model prezentuje vězeňskou subkulturu jako uzavřenou a strukturně i funkcionálně odlišnou od kultury většinové společnosti. Importační model naopak pohlíží na vězeňskou subkulturu jako podmnožinu kultury kriminální. Integrační model se poté oba předchozí snaží spojit na bázi komplementarity, když klade důraz na adaptaci a zároveň přenos kulturních vzorců mezi světem uvnitř (vězení) a venku. Poté práce představuje konkrétní konfigurace rolí a typologii subkultur a diskutována je i otázka genderu v souvislosti s vězeňskými subkulturami.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis presents findings from a wide range of studies about prison subcultures. It strives to summarize what is known about prisoner subcultures in institutions of men and it also tries to describe and analyze the dialectic relationships between the institution of prison and society as a whole. The thesis is first based on descriptions and theories of social deviation and criminality. Well-known approaches of Chicago (ecological) school, deviant subcultures theory, social control theory and radical criminology are discussed. Afterwards the attention is focused on concepts of subculture and theories of the institution of prison. The pivotal part of this thesis deals with three main approaches to prison subcultures: deprivation model, importation model and integration model. Each one is discussed separately as it applies to prison populations during the time. Deprivation model emphasizes the difference between prison subculture and outside world. Importation model finds striking similarities between the prison subcultures and the world outside the prison. Integration model tries to combine these approaches on the basis of complementarity. At the conclusion this thesis presents a compendium of different prisoner roles configurations and subculture typologies.
