Online social networks and social capital: Facebook and LinkedIn

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá online sociálními sítěmi z pohledu tvorby, kumulace a aktivizace sociálního kapitálu. Autor nejdříve předkládá konceptualizaci kapitálu obecně, následně definuje kapitál sociální. Ukazuje, že sociální kapitál je zasazen ve vztazích obsažených v sociálních sítích. Součástí práce je představení klíčových teorií a náhledů na sociální sítě. Autor dále diskutuje pojem online sociálních síti a jeho vztah ke konceptu Web 2.0. Na základě rozboru provádí re-definici online sociálních sítí, která mu umožňuje lépe vymezit a odlišit zvolené dva příklady tohoto typu sociálních sítí: Facebook a LinkedIn. Následnou analýzou potom uplatňuje představené koncepty a zkoumá, jak povaha vazeb artikulovaných skrze tyto služby ovlivňuje potenciál využití sociálního kapitálu jednotlivými aktéry. V obou případech se ukazuje, že struktura artikulovaných vazeb má větší význam, než samotný počet těchto vazeb. V tomto smyslu představují online sociální sítě nejen kvantitativní, ale především kvalitativní posun v získávání a uchovávání sociálního kapitálu.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis examines online social networks from the standpoint of creation, cumulation and acquisition of social capital. Firstly, the author lays out a conceptualization of capital as such, followed by a definition of social capital in particular, demonstrating that social capital is inherently rooted in relations within social networks. The thesis introduces key theories and perspectives on social networks. Further, the author discusses the term “online social networks” and its relation to the concept of Web 2.0. Drawing from an analysis, he re-defines the notion of online social networks which enables him to better classify and differentiate the two selected examples of the aforementioned types of social networks: Facebook and LinkedIn. Through subsequential analysis, he then employs the introduced concepts and examines how the nature of relations articulated through these services influences the potential utilization of social capital by individuals. In both cases it has been shown that the structure of articulated relations possesses a greater importance than the sum of these relations. Hence, online social networks represent not only quantitative but, primarily, a qualitative shift in acquisition and preservation of social capital.
