Abstract:

The thesis 'Water, Earth, Fire and Air: use and fuction of the four natural elements in the literary work of Carlos de Oliveira' explores the use of four classic natural elements in selected works from prose and poetry of Carlos de Oliveira. The principal question that the work seeks to answer is why and how the author used the symbolism of the four elements. After bibliography and biography of the author and analysis of the historical circumstances of neo-realism, where Carlos de Oliveira is classed, the work presents this literary chapter of Portuguese literature - the authors, the ideological basis, the polemics, in which was neo-realism defined. In four chapters devoted to each individual element then the work showes on concrete examples the symbols of the elements in each literary piece being the interpretation based on the work of Gaston Bachelard. As a possible opening for further research, the work presents other neorealist authors and similar symbolism in their works.

Magisterská diplomová práce Água, terra, fogo e ar: o uso e a função dos quatro elementos naturais na obra de Carlos de Oliveira zkoumá použití čtyř základních přírodních elementů ve vybraných prozaických a poetických dílech Carlose de Oliveiry. Základní otázkou, na kterou práce hledá odpověď, je, proč a jak autor symboliku živlů používal. Po bibliografii i biografii autora a analýze historických okolností vzniku neorealismu, kam je Carlos de Oliveira řazen, představuje tuto literární kapitolu portugalské literatury - její autory, ideologickou bázi, polemiky, v nichž se neorealismus tříbil a definoval. Ve čtyřech kapitolách věnovaných jednotlivým živlům pak práce na konkrétních příkladech ukazuje symboly živlů v jednotlivých dílech. Při interpretaci se opírá o práci Gastona Bachelarda. Jako možný začátek dalšího zkoumání práce představuje i další neorealistické autory a podobnou symboliku v jejich dílech.
