Vietnamese English. A Linguistic Analysis of English Produced by Vietnamese Speakers with the Focus on Phonology

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on Vietnamese English. The main aim of this work is to examine the influence of the native language, in this case, Vietnamese on English. And it is compared with the influence of the Czech language on English pronunciation. This thesis is based on a comparative analysis of the pronunciation of Vietnamese speakers, who live either in Vietnam or in the Czech Republic. Participants are between 14 - 30 years old and are people that either learned English or have been using English actively. This thesis consists of two parts, the Theoretical part where not only the main terms like language acquisition, universal grammar, and second language acquisition are explained into details but this thesis briefly describes the Vietnamese and English and briefly the Czech language in terms of segmental phonology. The empirical part comprises data analysis of authentic recordings from the participants living either in Vietnam or the Czech Republic. The outcome of this analysis should provide us with the most common mistakes produced by Vietnamese speakers in English.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na vietnamskou angličtinu a zkoumá vliv mateřského jazyka, v tomto případě vietnamštiny, a prvního naučeného jazyka, češtiny, na anglickou výslovnost. Cílem práce je zjistit a porovnat vliv těchto dvou odlišných jazyků na produkci angličtiny. Práce je založena na komparativní analýze anglické výslovnosti vietnamských mluvčí žijících ve Vietnamu nebo v České republice. Tohoto výzkumu se zúčastnili vietnamští mluvčí ve věku 14-30 let, kteří se anglicky učí nebo tento jazyk používají aktivně. Bakalářská práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. V teoretické části jsou detailně popsány a vysvětleny základní fonetické termíny. Je zde popsán zvukový systém vietnamštiny a angličtiny a krátce také češtiny s ohledem především na segmentální rovinu. Empirická část obsahuje analýzu dat získaných z autentických nahrávek účastníků výzkumu. Díky analýze jsme získali přehled nejčastějších chyb v anglické výslovnosti produkovaných vietnamskými mluvčími.
