Predictors of Academic Performance

Abstract:

The thesis deals with academic performance, particularly it aspires to find its most considerable predictors and eventual interdepartmental differences. In our research we administered various diagnostic methods to the sample of students from Masaryk university in Brno (N = 122). We used Raven´s Advanced Progressive Matrices to measure intelligence, NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) for personality traits, Academic Motivation Scale, translated into czech, for academic motivation and our own czech translation of Frustration Discomfort Scale to measure frustration intolerance. Used methods proved to be reliable when testing their psychometric properties. According to our results the most substantial influence on academic performance is saturated from motivation, particularly intrinsic (r = 0.33, p < 0.01). Frustration intolerance showed as negative predictor of performance in students of general medicine (r = -0.46, p < 0.05). There was significant correlation between conscientiousness and academic performance in students of Faculty of Economics and Administration (r = 0.46, p < 0.01). We didn´t confirm the influence of inteligence.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá akademickou úspešnosťou, konkrétne sa snaží nájsť jej najvýznamnejšie prediktory a prípadné medziodborové rozdiely. V našom vlastnom výskume sme vzorke študentov Masarykovej univerzity v Brne (N = 122) administrovali viaceré diagnostické metódy. Inteligenciu sme merali Ravenovými progresívnymi maticami pre pokročilých, osobnostné charakteristiky Päťfaktorovým osobnostným inventárom NEO-FFI, akademickú motiváciu českým prekladom Academic Motivation Scale a frustračnú intoleranciu nami do češtiny preloženým Frustration Discomfort Scale. Použité metódy sa z psychometrického hľadiska ukázali ako reliabilné. Pre operacionalizáciu akademického úspechu sme použili študijný percentil. Podľa našich výsledkov má najväčší vplyv na akademický úspech motivácia, konkrétne vnútorná (r = 0.33, p < 0.01). Frustračná intolerancia sa ukázala ako negatívny prediktor úspešnosti u skupiny študentov všeobecného lekárstva (r = -0.46, p < 0.05). Svedomitosť korelovala s akademickou úspešnosťou kladne u študentov Ekonomicko-správnej fakulty (r = 0.46, p < 0.01). Vplyv inteligencie sa nám nepodarilo potvrdiť.
