Who are they? A case study of MMIWG on the example of the disappearance of Shannon Alexander and Maisy Odjick

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the problem of disappearances and murders of Indigenous women in Canada. The case of the disappearance of Shannon Alexander and Maisy Odjick from the province of Quebec is used to illustrate the seriousness of the issue. First, the emphasis is put on the theoretical background, specifically on historic, cultural, and social phenomena which have contributed to discrimination and negative perception of Indigenous women by the majority society. The depiction of these women in the popular culture forms the final part of this theoretical background. The second part of the thesis is devoted only to the case of Shannon and Maisy; to their lives, families, and to the hypothesis about the possible causes of their disappearance. Special attention is paid to the work of the police and the media and to their attitude not only in the case of Shannon and Maisy but to the disappearances and murders of the First Nations women in general. The last part of the thesis focuses on Indigenous women and their perception of themselves. This part enables to see these women not as mere victims, but as strong personalities aware of their roots and of the strength of their culture.

Diplomová práce se zabývá problémem mizení a vražd žen z řad původního obyvatelstva na území Kanady, přičemž závažnost této problematiky je ilustrována konkrétním případem zmizení Shannon Alexander a Maisy Odjick z provincie Quebek. Nejdříve je kladen důraz na nastínění teoretického pozadí, konkrétně historicko-kulturně-sociálních jevů, které přispěly k diskriminaci a vesměs negativnímu vnímání původních obyvatelek většinovou společností. Finální část tohoto teoretického rozboru tvoří vyobrazení těchto žen v soudobé populární kultuře. Další část práce se už věnuje pouze případu Shannon a Maisy, jejich životům, rodinám a hypotézám, které mohly vést k jejich zmizení. Speciální pozornost je zde upřena zejména na práci policie a médií a jejich postoje nejen k případu Shannon a Maisy, ale k mizení a vraždám těchto žen obecně. Poslední část se pak věnuje původním obyvatelkám a jejich vnímání sebe sama. Tato část umožňuje vidět tyto ženy ne pouze jako oběti, ale jako silné osobnosti uvědomující si své kořeny a sílu svých kultur.
