Carotenoids, their role in health and disease

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je věnována látkám karotenoidní povahy z hlediska působení na zdravý a nemocný lidský organizmus. Karotenoidy jsou všeobecně považovány za jedny z nejdůležitějších a nejúčinnějších antioxidantů, avšak mechanizmy jejich působení v organizmu nejsou dosud zcela objasněny. Na základě již zjištěných poznatků z oblasti chemických, biochemických a fyziologických vlastností by tyto látky mohly mít důležitou úlohu v ochraně před civilizačními, či jinými chorobami. Práce shrnuje dosavadní poznatky vztahu karotenoidů především ke kardiovaskulárním a nádorovým onemocněním, a dále jejich možným využitím v profylaxi těchto chorob.

Abstract:

This bachelor work is paid to agents of carotenoid nature in terms of effects on healthy and diseased human organism. Carotenoids are generally considered to be one of the most important and most powerful antioxidants, but the precise mechanisms of their impact on humans have not been fully clarified, yet. On the basis of already identified knowledge in the field of chemical, biochemical and physiological characteristics of these substances they could have an important role in protection against civilization, or other diseases. The work summarizes the current knowledge related carotenoids particularly cardiovascular disease and cancer, and their potential use for prophylaxis of these diseases.
