Relationship between selected indicators of financial analysis and companies' ability to withstand a recession

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá účetní výkazy stovky náhodně vybraných českých podniků ve třech čtyřletých obdobích mezi lety 2005 a 2016, kdy prostřední z těchto období lze považovat za poslední zatím skončené období ekonomické recese v ČR. Cílem práce bylo posoudit, zda lze uspokojivě předvídat negativní dopady ekonomické recese na finanční zdraví podniků s pomocí ukazatelů finanční analýzy, a na základě zjištění navrhnout doporučení pro firmy. Za tím účelem byly s použitím statistické analýzy testovány vztahy mezi ukazateli, jejichž hodnoty jsou důsledkem strategického rozhodnutí podniku, a ukazateli, které vypovídají o jeho výkonu, likviditě a krátkodobé finanční stabilitě, a to mezi jednotlivými výše zmíněnými čtyřletými obdobími. Výsledky testů naznačují, že podniky s nižší mírou agresivity financování před recesí si v jejím průběhu i po ní udržely výkonnost i krátkodobou finanční stabilitu častěji než podniky s riskantnějším výchozím nastavením.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the financial statements of one hundred randomly selected Czech companies in three four-year long periods between 2005 and 2016, wheŕe the middle period can be considered to be the most recent period of economic recession in the Czech Republic that has already finished. The aim of the thesis was to assess whether the negative effects of the economic recession on the financial health of companies can be satisfactorily predicted with the help of financial analysis indicators, and to formulate a recommendation for companies based on the discovered facts. To this end, using statistical analysis, the relationships between indicators whose values are the result of a company's strategic decision and indicators that show its performance, liquidity and short-term financial stability were tested between aforementioned four-year periods. The test results suggest that firms with lower levels of funding aggressiveness before the recession maintained their performance and short-term financial stability during the recession and after it more often than firms with riskier setup.
